Just a quick mention here. I got one of my White Whales in the mail today (Friday 9 Aug) from Ebay. Now had it been just the white whale by itself and not the set it was from as well, I never would have spent this much on it. Unless something is a super vintage card say a huge vintage rookie card then I might pay what I paid for this lot for just one card.

First The price. Huge for only one card, but this particular card often sells for at lest an additional 1/3 if not 1/2 sometimes even a full 100% doubling of this price. OK so the Price $75.00 delivered.

The White Whale: 1982 Topps Traded Baseball #98T Cal Ripken Jr. RC Orioles, plus the box for the set PLUS (and this is the MOST IMPORTANT Part) The REST OF THE 1982 TOPPS TRADED BASEBALL SET cards 1T - 132T (the checklist).

I bid on it within the last five minutes of the auction, my max bid was only $10 more than the opening bid which I got it for the opening bid. Nobody else bid. Plus the set is in NRMNT the box is in very good shape a bit beat up but the cards are the important thing and the Cal was separate from the set (the rest of the set in the box) and the Cal in a hard plastic magnetic holder.

I was a bit concerned from about the moment I had won the auction and re-read the description. By all appearances it could have been misinterpreted as just being the Cal car. The picture showed the Cal card (in the case) sitting on the set box the auction title "1982 Topps Traded Cal Ripken Jr. RC Card #98T. NRMT Condition. Includes Box" the "item specifics" only had filled in Card Attributes: Rookie and Player: Cal Ripken. But the key to success was in the actual description which itself was a worrisome one sentence "1982 Topps Traded Cal Ripken Jr. RC Card #98t and the rest of the set 1-t through 132t. NRMT Condition. Beautiful Card with sharp corners!" the part I put in bold "and the rest of the set 1-t through 132t." is what I was relying on to be true. it was.

A few days ago I checked some completed Ebay sales (sold ones) and saw the lowest was $40 for just the Cal. Man that would be a sweet price to get it at, and of course the highest for just the one card mind you was easily over $100. That is way over my budget. I have said many times that for just one card my ceiling is about $40 up to about $50 for just one card. I have also said there are some super vintage cards that I might mind you might make an exception for. So it boggles my mind when I see sellers everyday listing cards for well over $100 and people buying those cards up for $100s. Sometimes the wishful starting first prices are $1,000 or over, but end up being in the $100s.
