This item came from from one of our new weekly features - Beckett Game Notes provided by Beckett Media. Click here to read this week's article.

Parts of the article:

"Any hockey fan also would love to have a card signed by junior sensation Sidney Crosby. But even though the kid has never scored an NHL goal, it'll cost you a lot more to obtain his autograph than that of Gretzky. Recent sales for a card Crosby signed for Toronto-based In The Game have topped $500 and show no sign of slowing down."

and

"Crosby's regular cards in the In The Game Heroes and Prospects set routinely sell for upwards of $40. By way of comparison, the cards from the same set of 2003 first overall pick Marc-Andre Fleury and Ontario Hockey League leading scorer Corey Perry can be had for about $3, while Hall of Famers like Rocket Richard, Bobby Orr and Jacques Plante are two bucks or less."

So, what do our hockey collectors think? Is Crosby the real deal? Should talk about the "Great One" even be considered yet?

One of these years there will be another one. There are a lot of great young talented players in the NHL already with Gaborik, Nash, Kovylchuk, etc to name a few. Almost 30 years ago Pittsburgh fans wondered around with bags on their heads waiting for the one named Lemeiux. I am happy to say I got to see him and Gretzky play and I even saw Gordie at the end of his career. These players come around only once every other decade so there is another one out there somewhere. I have not seen Crosby play, but there is always hype about some player, last year it was Ovechekin, the 2 years before that it was Spezza. We will just have to wait and see, the minors do not compare to the NHL. I doubt anyone will compare to the three above, but one day someone will. When they do, take the chance and buy a ticket or watch the game on tv as magic like that does not happen with every player.

Oh, and just to name a few top draft busts, lets start with Alexander Daigle, and Eric Lindros neither has lived up to the hype although Lindros did play longer and do better than Daigle.

Lindros - There's a name that alot of us collectors with lots of cards from the early 90s don't want to hear very often. laugh.gif

No talk of this sort should be in the works. I think a lot of people are seeing a chicken where there is only an egg right now...

I think the real bonus is going to be the rule changes put in place this year to improve scoring.

Yes, that's another change that can maybe really help to pull in new fans like me. There's lots of us out here who are big sports fans, but maybe never followed hockey too closely - other than ESPN highlights, web site headlines and the playoffs. If scoring goes up, interest should go up.

Yeah, the real concern is the damage the Pens have done the last 10 years to their last first round picks. MA Fleury for example...

Some may disagree...but I think the best thing for the Pens is if Mario hangs up the skates and the Pens get on to the business of building their franchise to a competitive level.

As a very casual Pens watcher/tracker, I agree with you.
