I can see both sides. I have way too many cards (PC and tradebait and in-between) to scan. I work full-time and don't always have the energy when I get home to sort through my boxes looking for that rookie card for trader "x" I thought I had, but I do put an effort into looking when I do have the energy. I also have many other things to do in addition to cards (I've been in my apartment almost 2 years and still have tons of boxes in various rooms and don't have everything organized the way I would like) so it may take more than 5 seconds to get back to someone.
I will usually try to do some negotiating, as often I'm the one who will not find anything I like in the other trader's bucket, and I don't like looking at a list that is the equivalent of 100 pages in 10pt font or smaller, that doesn't appear to be in any particular order except maybe by year.
Both traders need to be able to negotiate and maybe make a concession or two. You might have to take a card that is only half the BV of the card you are trading to make the deal, or you might have to add some cards to sweeten the pot. Not all trades will be a simple "I like card #3 on page 4 for my Ultra Rare #1/1 SuperStar GU that you like".
If I don't see anything I like I usually ask it they have something else from team X or from that series/set they seem to have a bunch of cards from. I also usually ask them what they are looking for in similar value or what team/players they collect. I don't usually know (or care too much) which college a player went to, but I usually will have an idea if I have a card or to from them, or the pro-team they play on.
I will work with the other trader to try to make a deal, not just shoo them off just because I didn't like their book's cover.
