Phenomenal cards there! Give us some background on those Dave.

Posted by: finestkind Apr 14 2008, 12:31 AM

Sure thing Willy

A lot of people have modern day player collections. Since I don't collect modern day players, I started a pre-war card collection of players named Hogan (my last name) shhh don't tell anyone. laugh.gif The Exhibit card I won on Ebay last year for a 50th birthday present to myself. The Home Run Kisses I bought on a pre-war message board. The cards run from 1887 in poor condition to that card and one or two other graded cards. I have about 30 cards with people named Hogan in all kinds of sports from lacrosse to jockies to boxing and baseball. It took me a while to find that Exhibit card I could afford. I've seen them from $350 to $1250 on Ebay, dealer catalogs and vintage websites.

It's not a card as in the traditional since....just a real photo postcard.

(hope this shows)

Wow! 1910!!! Wow, the first dealer!!! ohmy.gif Was he the first dealer in the U.S. you mean? or in Worcester? I've never heard of Pope-Hartford. Was that an American built car with English parts do you know?

Posted by: finestkind Nov 5 2008, 12:34 AM

My mother tells me he was the first car dealer in Worcester. They sold Pope-Hartford automobiles. That were produced in Connecticut. Here's a website about the http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z10060/Pope-Hartford-Touring.aspx

http://img532.imageshack.us/i/scan0001dk.jpg/

I'm originally from Worcester Mass. The Oval was originally built for track and field games. From 1893 to 1907 the New England Intercollegiate Games were held here. Other events included bicycle racing and Gaelic football games.

The first baseball team to use the Oval was the 1894 New England League Club and the last team was 1904 Connecticut League team the was transferred to Norwich, CT.

Currently the Oval is St. George's Cathedral, no signs of the park exist.

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned this but that card showing is 1973 not '74, but you are right '73 was his last card. Technically he was on a '74 card but it wasn't his it was the World Series Game #2 card.

Here is what a '74 card looks like:

The Padres were rumored to be moving to DC in late '73. Topps thought it (the move) was a sure thing. They produced 15 Padres cards with the "Washington Nat'l Lea." as the team name since a new name hadn't been picked yet. The cards are the same as the regular Padres cards only the team name on the front is different the backs stayed the same. The Washington Variation although rarer is not too difficult to complete a set of now with the internet. Before the internet it was more difficult.

Yes that crease across his midsection does have some clear tape over it to keep the card together. It's that big crease on the back that goes across the middle of what should be a scratch off cartoon, except it was over scratched years ago. Some of that staining on the back might be from rubber cement from the days when the card was housed in a photo album. The poor card was abused long ago.

Now I have some cards from the 1950s so I'm not sure of the year of my oldest card as I also have a handful of Non-Sport tobacco cards (I think I mention them in my TCCBlog somewhere). I think my oldest now is a "Girl of the World" (or some similar title) from the 1930s I think. I need to recheck when I think about it. It is not high on the priorities for my collection though.

Yes I've got both of those. Problem was they were very popular right then (1974) and in school those were the cards you showed off. So mine are a little roughed up. I bought a complete set also that year from Larry Fritsch but they were the corrected San Diego version.

The Ruth I believe is from a set in 63, not sure on the name, where the cards came in a booklet with many of the greats of the game. I have a few others from the set but the Ruth is by far my favorite.

Posted by: captkirk42 Jun 19 2011, 08:17 PM

Ben,

Found where the Ruth came from via http://www.checkoutmycards.com/Cards/Baseball/1961/Golden_Press/3/Babe_Ruth/1811126. 1961 Golden Press. Then did a Google search to verify in case comc was off on some of the info.

This auction site? shows the book cover http://sports.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=47051&lotNo=12214

Here is an online visual checklist. http://www.vintagecardtraders.com/virtual/61golden_press/61golden_press.html

It's a beautiful set.

Posted by: saints94 Jun 20 2011, 03:29 PM

Thank you Kirk for the info. I knew the set came from the early 60's just not exactly sure when. After looking at the virtual card collection I have more to the set than I thought at first. I think these cards are my favorites of my collection and always will be.
