Collector Zone _ OpenChecklist _ Introducing OpenChecklist.com!

Posted by: bob_TCC Jan 4 2006, 01:25 PM

What's some of the most useful information for collectors? Simple - checklists!

Until now, collectors found themselves searching across a number of web sites in order to track down trading card checklists. Some of this data is available free of charge while some sites only make this data available once you purchase other data such as price guides.

Well, this all just changed! Jim (jrlenox) and I are pleased to introduce OpenChecklist.com!

http://www.openchecklist.com

So, what exactly is the purpose of OpenChecklist.com? It is a database and Internet-based tool for holding trading card checklist, want list and inventory data so that it can be shared with collectors around the globe.

Here's our mission statement:

"Our mission is to create and maintain a master database of up-to-date and accurate trading card data. To support this mission, we will develop industry standards for the communication and transfer of trading card and set data over the Internet. Using these standards, we will further develop and support the development of applications to support the hobby and trading card collectors.

To further encourage the collecting of trading cards, our commitment is to provide free access to the trading card database for all collectors and at all time."

Can you imagine the online collecting tools that would benefit from such a massive database of checklists? Well, we have! Here are some of the tools that are now available:

Checklist Browser/Search - provides the ability to browse and perform simple searches on data for all types of trading cards.

Collector Profile - allows a collector to register and list their personal collecting interests. Search for other collectors by region or area of interest.

Collector Want List - allows a collector to take any checklist item and add it to their "Want List" which appears on their main collector page and can be linked to from anywhere.

Collector Inventory - a simple inventory system that shows cards you have available to trade or sell.

In addition, initial versions of these tools are also available:

Automated Trade Manager - matches cards between the Want Lists and Inventory of all registered users.

Collector Feedback System - a "one-stop shop" to list your accounts and feedback with other online auction and trading sites so you can take your trading credibility with you. Linked with your Profile, Want List and Inventory and the Automated Trade Manager, this will quickly become the most powerful trading tool on the Internet.

OpenChecklist.com is a major project that has been planned and worked on throughout most of 2005. At this time, we are providing TCC Collector Zone members with a "sneak peak" prior to our official launch next month. We simply ask you to please visit the site, register and provide feedback.

If you're ready to see what this is all about, then please visit:

http://www.openchecklist.com

In addition, please be sure to check out our all-new OpenChecklist sub-forums including:

http://www.tradingcardcentral.com/forums/index.php?showforum=90 - Home for OpenChecklist members.

http://www.tradingcardcentral.com/forums/index.php?showforum=91 - Discussion of all issues related to trading card checklists.

http://www.tradingcardcentral.com/forums/index.php?showforum=93 - Discussion of all tools and services powered by OpenChecklist.

http://www.tradingcardcentral.com/forums/index.php?showforum=92 - Provide feedback and make suggestions about OpenChecklist.

Have fun!

-Bob

Please note that we are currently working daily to update our extensive database of over 1.29 million trading cards. In fact, expect new checklists and functionality to be added throughout 2006. Also, look for future announcements about new TCC features that will be powered by OpenChecklist!

We've already had over 20 collectors register for the site with 15 of those also creating their profile.

Once you register and create a profile though, please spend some time to register your interests, want lists and inventory. As more collectors define this data, we'll begin to see some of the real power provided by OpenChecklist! wink.gif

We're starting to see some Want List and Inventory pages take shape! In fact, a couple of collectors have already learned just how easy it is to find out whether someone needs cards in your Inventory or whether someone has cards on your Want List.

Give it a try. wink.gif

yaah .. after catching up on the backlog (a few months worth of work)

.. there will always be the collector that want's a checklist for tomorrow's set yesterday ... and we'll have to live with it. (or just send out a hit squad to get these collectors tongue.gif )

we will hopefully be in a good position to at least attempt it .. but hey .. if the product hasn't shiped and the company hasn't given an advanced release of the checklist .. it becomes beg, borrow and steal time - fun when we get to that point. Stay tuned.

A good tool. Not to be a detractor, but presently it misses the same information 95% of checklists do - what team the player is pictured with.

Thanks for the feedback. OpenChecklist is going to be a very powerful tool as we continue to develop it and add data. However, you can already begin to understand the new way that trading will be done! Most collectors will prefer to let the software find cards for them rather than spend hours and hours sifting through web sites looking for cards. wink.gif

To add items to your Interests, Want List or Inventory, simply go to those items by either browsing or searching. Then, you'll find options to add those items. For example, you can use the Update link in the My Interest area or you can use the checkboxes and the Add button for cards within a set.

That pricing is only through their NRP program which is an extra $4.99 just for that product. mad.gif

It will likely still be several weeks before pricing for this product is included in the OPG. wink.gif

Posted by: CodyJohnson117 Jan 15 2006, 02:03 AM

Yeah, I wonder why? I guess they were trying to make money, money, and money for something, something, and something. Or that's because they work hard to find the price for it and they need earn something and they put 4.99 for it. Its not bad though. Once when I get turn 18, I'll probably subscribe it though. With Credit Card? Why not Money Order.... How Ridiclous.

Bob,

I submitted a pic for a Jerry Rice redemption piece and seriously wouldn't mind loaning all of my Brunell pics if needed. However, can you guys put a "property of OpenChecklist" or "TCC.com" over the pics -- I would just hate it for thieves/scammers steal pics and then auction off stuff they don't have. Let me know

Posted by: CodyJohnson117 Jan 15 2006, 10:15 AM

Well... Why? I sometimes save the picture as something and put my photo manager because it remind me of something. I don't put those to sell, I promise. LoL... Anyway, I only copied one picture and its pretty cool and I put my picture folder too. To Remind me something. Well, if you lock that picture, i'll be a little disappiotment! Anyway, that's sound fine though. OKay, i'll let ya'll go, sorry, lol.

I'm working out ways for OpenChecklist to host images .. wither

1) Collectors Scan in cards from their collection - and if OpenChecklist doesn't have a version yet, allow Openchecklist to use theirs.
2) have a central hosted collection of images (researched, purchased, and home scanned)...

with the images .. the images of cards are the rights of the card company, players associations, etc so they won't be ownership issues. Images for the site are just for reference ..

.. the effort to get a good scan of your card in is another story .. and that's what I think you are mentioning. Also the potential of an Ebay scam artist to set up an auction with cards that you scanned . ... you can't do much about that.

If you scan it and put it on line somewhere .. its almost open season. Not only for the small time collector or the Ebay scanner .. Companies like Google, Alexa (owned by amazon.com), MSN (Microsoft) have rooms full of servers scanning the Internet and taking a copy of every picture.

some ways to get around it is a "watermark" in an image .. some sightly visible text or a blurb across is saying "scanned for OpenChecklist.com" which is hard to remove .. but probably easy if you know how.

Its a tricky issue ...

the "n/a" was just because you weren't logged it .. those sections will allow you to add the card to your inventory and checklist if you were ..

going back to the "missing prices" ...

this is a big culture change in the trading card industry. people want to instanly see a checklist with something called a "book value" next to it.

you can get a "price" on most things in OpenChecklist and look at the current calue.

for every card or set, there is an "ebay" link .. which will do a instant search of ebay and bring the results back to OpenChecklist. If someone else is listing the Item, you can see how much buyers on Ebay are bidding for it. that way .. if you were planning to list yours .. that is how mch you should expect to get.

and we're thinking of more integrations to draw in prices based on the current market/supply and demand.

Instead just a made up and published "book" value .. of which ones created by the major suppliers (e.g. Beckett) seem over inflated, out of touch with reality and slow to respond to changing markets.

hope that helps and stick with us ..

Well, I'll take this opportunity to thank Jim (jrlenox) for all of his help and hard work on this project and doing so much to turn the ideas and concept into an actual database and working web site. Thanks, Jim!

We're all looking forward to a great year for OpenChecklist.com! wink.gif

It seems to me that as TCC grows...the ability to list (easily) and utilize the features (for trading) of OPENCHECKLIST are underutilized. My question is: why does there seem to be such waste of such a essential asset to this site?
I for one use it but find several "holes" (like list updates and technical support) that need to be bridged. Thanks for reading Hector.

That's part of the problem...if you want to list cards by player...some players upload correctly and it's 123 then like Frank Thomas...nothing I do seems to work. I know this doesn't answer your specific issues but it demonstrates part of the problem. When it works right..it's great. Hector.

At open checklist, and everytime i goto search this error comes up,

OpenChecklist could not handle your request

I am a registered user, have used this site before and haven't been able to access for the last 2 to 3 months. I even tried to contact and came up with the same error.

Bob_TCC is the owner of Open Checklist. He is also the owner of Trading Card Central. The past few months he has been ultra busy with his personal job/life. He has from time to time stopped by to post on TCC. I'm sure when he is able to, he will look into the issues with Open Checklist

If people start catching onto this and the database gets a lot bigger this could be great for card collectors everywhere.

No, Jon (nerk01) is running it now. I believe he was the co-founder with Bob.
