I have often been asked about my political views, and once I've told people how I feel about politics, or whatever the "hot topic" in politics happen to be at that moment, I've often offended someone, and most of the time they were offended because my opinions tend to be extremely conservative. It is because of this that I limit my political views. I will give a brief synopsis of my political views and allow you guys to judge them for what they are.
RELIGION - While I have not voluntarily been to Church, outside of weddings and funerals, in many years, it irks me to no end to hear of some of these groups, normally the ACLU types complaining that a slab of marble with the 10 commandments on a State Capital lawn violates the "separation of church and state". If you do not beleive in God, that's fine, by being an American citizen you have the right to worship in whatever manner you choose, outside of Human sacrifice, however, I'm sure that some ACLU attorney would find a way to protect someone who wanted to use human sacrifice in their religious rituals. If you do not believe in God, and see the 10 commandments posted somewhere, you have the right as an American citizen to not look at it!!!!! A state sanctioned sermon, or having a chapel in the State Capital, may be a violation of the separation of church and state, but having a granite or marble slab sitting in the Lawn of the capital building isn't such a violation in my opinion.
LAW - Don't get me started here. The first topic I will cover is the death penalty. Not only do I believe that it is necessary, but with the limitless appeals system that keeps a death row inmate sitting in prison for an average of 8 years (in Texas, much longer in other states), my only problem is that the death sentence isn't carried out fast enough. Texas executes more convicted capital murders than any other state in the nation, and I'm still not completely satisfied with the system.
Search and Seizure - The 4th ammendment of the Constitution provides everyone security from UNREASONALBE searches and seizures. The liberals and their counterparts on the ACLU make it harder and harder every year for law enforcement to effectively do their jobs. The supreme court, which has sided with the Liberals for many years, has so many restrictions on how we go about our business in Law Enforcement that there is no way we can be effective. Having worked narcotics for two years during my 10 year career, I have learned a lot about the common profile of drug offenders (without using race as a basis of those observations.) If I see a house, occupied by a group of two or three individuals, they have a car pull up, one person gets out, goes inside for less than a minute, and comes out, or better yet, someone comes out of the house, meets them at the car, and an exchange is made, something is wrong. When this occurs 20 to 30 times an hour with different vehicles every time, it's pretty obvious to me that theres a drug dealer living in that house. According to the courts these observations, from an experience narcotics detective, are not good enough. I have to recruit an informant, I have to video and audio tape at least two drug transactions, and THEN I can get a warrant. I nearly lost an attempted murder case several years ago because I responded to a reported domestic disturbance. When I made entry into the house I observed the husband laying in the floor in a 3 foot wide puddle of blood with his throat cut with a broken whiskey bottle. I looked at the wife and I asked her "what happened to him?" She told me "I hope I killed that...!!!!!" That statement was supressed from the court because I had not informed her of her miranda right at the time. Luckily enough she made the same statement and signed a confession after having been given the Miranda Warning. Most of my significant drug discoveries coming from vehicle stops has been as the result of "consent searches." I stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, mostly equipment violations because someone hauling 30 pounds of dope from the border normally don't speed. During the stop I ask them some basic quesions and based on the answers they give to their questions I determine whether or not there's a posibility that this person is a drug courier. My best was two guys from Harlingen TX. The driver tells me that they're going to California to see his daughter who is pregnant, the passenger tells me they are going to Colorado to do contract labor. Based on the differences in their stories, as well as their nervous behavior, I felt that something was wrong. I asked the driver for a consent to search the vehicle and he signed a consent to search form. Under the back seat of the vehicle I located 29 pounds of Marijuana and in the glove compartment I found 66 grams (little over 2 ounces) of cocaine. They were using the cocaine in order to stay awake so they could deliver their load to it's destination, turn around and drive back home without stopping. Both got 10 years in prison to be served day for day with no good time. As it turns out, the State legislature, has a bill on the floor now that would make it illegal for me to get a consent to search on a vehicle without significan "probable cause" that a crime is being committed. Based on the story above I did not have probable cause, I had what is termed as "reasonable suspicion" that a crime was being committed, and based on the bill on the floor right now the guys above would have gotten off scott free. Naturally, the bill was written by a Democrat out of Houston who has a criminal history for DWI and drug possession charges in the late 70's and early 80's.
My Final Topic, the War in Iraq.
In my opinion, our beef wasn't with Iraq this time. Osama and his buddies in Afghanistan on the other hand, need to be smoked out of whatever hole they're in and killed on sigth. However, whether or not we had business in Iraq is not the point. The point is that our country is at war, and whether or not you agree with the reason or purpose of the war doesn't matter. We have a duty, as Americans to support the men and women that are there. They, in my opinion, should not be the subject of resentment, ridicule, and protest. Our men and women over there are doing what they were trained to do. Sadam wasn't exactly an angel either, and whether or not he had "weapons of mass destruction" isn't the point either. The fact that Sadam has ruthlessly murdered over 1 million of his fellow countrymen while in power is more than enough reason for me to see his removal from power as a good thing. My only point to this is....Support our Troops.
As you can see...any debate of political subjects with me will likely get your feelings hurt if your a democrat or a card carrying member of the ACLU.....I have a real problem with criminals having rights.....if their crime is great enough that they lose their freedom to be in society and find themselves locked up behind bars.....then that's just too bad for them.
