Here's a list of literature for the begining and advanced vintage collector.

The Encyclopedia Of Baseball Cards by Lew lipset.
A 3 volume reprint book.
Volume 1. 19th century sports cards, 19th century advertising cards, inserts and premiums.
Volume 2. Early gum and candy card issues.
Volume 3. 20th Century tobacco Cards.
Great description of sets with checklists and black and white pictures.

Classic Baseball Cards. The Golden Years. By Frank Slocum
Full color pictures of cards from the 1860's thru the 50's. With description of cards and sets. Awsome pictures to drool over. Nice coffee table type of book.

The Complete Picture Collection. 1951- 1985 Topps Baseball Cards. By Frank Slocum
Another great book with full color pictures of Topps baseball cards. Only shows the front of the cards.

The American Card Catalog. Edited by J.R. Burdick.
A reprint of the original book from 1967. A black and white book with lists of
Advertising cards. 19th century and 20th century tobacco cards, 19th and 20century souvenier and foreign cards. Not much for checklists. But still maybe helpful.

The 2007 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. By Bob Lemke from the publisher of Sports Collectors Digest. A yearly price guide for cards from the 1860's thru 2006 cards. Gives a checklist and prices for vintage and modern and oddball card sets. Great descriptions of cards and sets. With measurements of the cards. Black and white pictures. A yearly updated book. Older sets have been dropped form the 2007 book to make more room for modern cards.
