Collector Zone _ Football _ The Official 2010 Detroit Lions Season Thread

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Aug 7 2010, 11:29 AM

Haven't seen a Lions thread yet for the season this year. So figured that I would create one so everyone could keep up with training camp news and season talk and stats. I plan on taking a trip over to Allen Park for the Lions training camp practices on the 17th, 18th, and 19th.

Go Lions!

2010 Detroit Lions Predictions:

-6-10
-Matt Stafford Gets Hurt Midway through the Season
-Detroid Lion Fans AKA: Mad Stafford Fanboys defend Stafford as "a yound kid" and "bound to make mistakes" and "still better than (insert name here)
-Kevin Smith gets hurt and nobody is suprised.
-ESPN still reminds Lions fans of the 0-16 season with such captivating commentary as "This is a team that only a few years ago went 0-16, they did not win a single game."
-Drew Stanton gets hurt before he even starts a game.

I'll come up with more Lions stereotypes as they get progressivly worse in the season tongue.gif.

I see us as a 6-10 team this year. We have some easy home games early in the year, and if we can win those, it would be a huge boost for the team. Hopefully Stafford can stay healthy this year, and even if Kevin Smith does get hurt, we have rookie Jahvid Best to back him up. Our defense continues to improve this year, and with the additions or Ndamukong Suh and Kyle VandenBosch on the defensive line, we can put some pressure on the QB (a thing we haven't been able to do consistently for quite some time).

My prediction for the Lions is 7-9. Im thinking this will finally be the year. We now have no Millen picks on roster.

Easy home games early on in the year??? What games are you talking about besides the Rams?

I can see us beating Philly in week 2. I don't really think Kevin Kolb will be able to live up to the hype he has already received. The Redskins game will be a battle, but I see us coming out on top late with a heroic last minute drive by Stafford and the gang.

Correct! I would take those odds as well.

I actually see a lot more potential here than you "fans" are offering.

1. Stafford may thrive without Mad Mike running him around looking for a 6th and 7th read!

2. Kevin Smith?? I like Best to be better than Smith

3. Calvin Johnson is no fluke! Nate burleson will take some heat off him deep

4. Sheffler and Pettigrew will form a dangerous tag team at TE

5. Im expecting huge things from Defense orchestrated by Gunther Cunningham who knows a thing or two about defense!

6. The Norris Division is not what it once was. The Vikes are Leaderless on offense, the Bears have Mad Mike, the Packers seem the class here.

7. Playing a last place schedule and 3 winnable games in the division (figuring a split with minnesota) I calculate a 10-6 Record!

That being said I also placed $10 on the Bears laugh.gif Cause they got Mad Mike!

Wow! 10-6 is a generous record. I see this as another "rebuilding" year. We still need to address the offensive line, (a thing we have been putting off for quite some time now). Backus just can't get it done anymore, Cherilus is still young and learning, and our guards are very weak as well! We can't expect to score enough points to win when Stafford is running for his life all game.

Easier than the Jets, Patriots, and Packers who we play at home later in the season.

Posted by: joe31 Aug 8 2010, 04:09 PM

I actually agree with everything you said there. I was thinking 10-6 too but Lions fans have been saying that for the past couple years and they havent even come close. I think 10-6 is a real possibility. They lost a lot of games in the 4th quarter last year. I think with Stafford now in his second year he may be able to control the games a little bit more and cut down on the ints.

Actually Backus is considered a really good tackle. We picked up a few from last year and this year and I think their line should be better this year. I think they can score enough points. The problem will be if Detroits Defense can stop the other team from scoring a lot of points. With the Addition of Suh, Williams, and Vanden Bosch I see that helping. Delmas will be even better too.

Yeah but whats that have to do with it? You said the Lions have easy home games to start the season. Im saying they arnt going to be that easy.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Aug 8 2010, 04:42 PM

I wouldn't consider Backus a really good tackle. He has already passed his "prime", and I think it's time to bring in somebody new. I'm saying the start of the season is a lot easier than it could be. It would be nice to take all three of those games, and it's definitely a strong possibility.

Posted by: joe31 Aug 8 2010, 04:44 PM

Backus past his prime? l2ms. No, a lot of tackles stay in the league a long time. Backus is not that old yet. I dont think he is the best tackle in the world, but he can still get the job done.

I agree, but if you want to make a deep run into the playoffs or have a successful season, just "getting the job done" won't cut it.

First preseason game tonight, at 7:30 eastern time @ Pittsburgh Steelers. Tune in!

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Aug 15 2010, 10:35 AM

The first preseason game one was a wild one. The game started off very well, I really liked the look of our defensive starters. In 15 years, I've never seen us put as much pressure on the QB. Our offense took a little while to get going, but once we did, we embarked on a 75 yard drive, capped off by a 2 yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson. After that drive, almost all of the starters came out of the game. Dennis Dixon tore our backup secondary apart in the second half, and eventually led the Steelers to victory 23-7.

Posted by: austin81 Aug 15 2010, 01:06 PM

the lions looked pretty decent last night facing the steelers. they just need to put together a decent line and they will be pretty solid with offense. now defense needs alittle help other than there line bc we have no corner backs at all of defensive bakcs other than Delmas.
so it will be interesting.

I agree. When Delmas and Pettigrew return it will help a lot.

Training camp story 8/19:

Wow! Yesterday was a blast. The afternoon practice opened at about 3pm to the public so we got there around 1pm. We hung out with a bunch of other fans and stood in line in the parking lot. About 30 minutes before practice opened, a employee walked out with 10 VIP passes for the younger kids at the camp. My brother actually got one and got to walk into the training facility to see the locker room, weight room, and a few players including Ndamukong Suh and Calvin Johnson. Later before practice, my brother got to walk out onto the field with one of the Lions offensive linemen, and carry his helmet. It was an awesome experience for him. Practice went pretty smoothly, I watched Matthew Stafford throw a few balls, then watched the special teams for a bit before they started 7 on 7 scrimmages. I went and stood in the autograph line to see who was signing underneath the tent after practice, it turned out to be Jahvid Best, Matt Moore, T.J Rushing, and an offensive linemen. I was planning on waiting to get Best's autograph when I saw Pettigrew walk over to a fence, and nobody was by him. I quick jogged out of the autograph barriers and walked up and asked for an autograph. He happily signed my mini-helmet and then we talked for a good minute or so. Once I was done with him, I was looking for Stafford. Finally I spotted him out surrounded by at least a hundred people. I tried squeezing through the people, and eventually worked my way towards the front of the fence. I reached my football out over the fence and.....Matthew Stafford grabbed it. He signed and handed it back to me while I said "thanks, and good luck this year." I went onto get a few other no-name autographs and headed home. It was an awesome experience, probably one I will never forget. I'll be sure to post pictures later! .

Preseason game two is in progress as we speak! Game started with a beautiful 10-play 75 yard drive for a field goal, a defensive stop, then another great drive ending with a 20 yard connection, Stafford to Johnson for a 20 yard TD. The Broncos managed to get a touchdown a few minutes ago, but we look pretty good yet again.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Aug 22 2010, 09:04 AM

The Lions pull out with the victory after Drew Stanton's 25 yard scamper for the game winning TD. Final score 25-20.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Aug 26 2010, 09:17 AM

Preseason game three is Saturday, August 28th at 5pm vs the Browns.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Aug 29 2010, 09:13 AM

Preseason game three was a good one, and in the end the Lions came out on top, 35-27. Matthew Stafford led the Lions going 13/17 for 141 yards and a touchdown, while Jahvid Best only needed once touch to put his name on this game, a 51 yard sprint down the sideline in the first half. Aaron Brown added two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to seal the victory.

Well, it looks like some people are almost as optimistic as I am for our (I had to erase "my" and write "our." I'm so used to talking to non-Lions fans that it's strange to be among some) Lions this year. At about the time of the draft, I was guessing 8-8 if our major guys can stay healthy and in the lineup. Some of them have performed better than I had imagined so far in preseason, and some of them haven't performed as well as I had hoped, but overall, I think it will even out.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Sep 3 2010, 09:43 AM

8-8 would be nice, Dennis. Last night the Lions faced off against the Bills in their final preaseaon game of 2010. Lions didn't look too sharp coming out of the gate, but their play improved as the game went on. They ended up defeating the Bills 28-23, despite Jahvid Best, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh never playing a down.

Posted by: yilduz Sep 3 2010, 11:35 AM

The beginning was terrible, but they kept fighting and ended up coming back. I was getting a little worried near the end but an interception followed by a 102 yard return for a touchdown sealed it. I'm really looking forward to the Lions this year.

Also, Stanton's pass percentage was crap, but I think he played well. If not for him, Detroit may have lost this game. I've always liked Stanton and I'd like to see him get more opportunities.

Yeah, I'm not so sure Stanton will make the team. I heard rumors that the Lions might only carry two quarterbacks (Stafford and Hill) and keep another specialist or carry another RB. I'm interested to see who is going to make the team, the RB position is log-jammed with Best, Smith, Brown, Morris, and DeDe Dorsey (we'll probably only keep 4). Preseason really doesn't mean a thing though, we'll see next Sunday if we're the real deal or not.

Posted by: yilduz Sep 3 2010, 12:05 PM

Dorsey played pretty well, too. I like watching him, Brown, and Toone in kick/punt returns, but obviously we only need one. I'm sure Best is going to start (in fact, I need him to start for the sake of my fantasy team), but if the Lions were to only hold onto four of those RBs, I'd like to see Smith go on the trading block rather than cut one of the others. It'll probably be Morris that gets cut, though. I would love to see Stanton hold a roster spot, but we're not the decision makers, are we? tongue.gif

Let's see what happens on Sunday.

Yes he did play well. Don't forget about Derrick Williams as a KR/PR, he's really improved in those areas since last season (his play at WR hasn't though laugh.gif). Yes, Best will start, I have him on fantasy team also. We were trying to trade Kevin Smith to the Saints for Darren Sharper, but I believe Sharper got injured. I agree with you though, if we cut a RB it will be Morris.

I was unaware of that trade rumor. I would have loved to have Sharper. Obviously it doesn't do us any good to have a DB that can't play, but that's where the Lions biggest problems are right now.

On a similar side note, I'm not sure how you feel about it, but I LOVE that they brought back Dre Bly. He should finish his career in Detroit, and I think he would enjoy it, too. He was a hero for Lions fans when he played for them before.

Yes I loved that move as well. He has looked decent so far in preseason, and he looked great in-person at training camp.

Posted by: yilduz Sep 6 2010, 11:50 AM

And immediately after we were talking about how happy we are about getting Dre Bly, and how well he has been doing, the Lions cut him.

With their secondary suffering as much as it has been, I can't believe they cut Bly. This move makes no sense to me.

What are your options again? Stafford or Romo? I would definitely start Romo. It's a Sunday night game, he's playing the Redskins, a division rival. I wouldn't say the Redskins have a "strong" secondary either. He should go off pretty well that night I'll predict 300 yards and 2 TD's.

Don't really want to hear it right now, thanks. It's so frusterating to finally have a legit chance at winning 6 or more games, only to have your young star quarterback go down, and then to cap it off, a horrible call in the endzone to give the game to the Bears.

Reports say MRI and X-rays tomorrow. Hopefully he's alright.

They're saying no surgery, and he's hopeful to be back for week 2.

QUOTE(ronaldinho0003 @ Sep 10 2010, 06:50 PM)
What are your options again? Stafford or Romo? I would definitely start Romo. It's a Sunday night game, he's playing the Redskins, a division rival. I wouldn't say the Redskins have a "strong" secondary either. He should go off pretty well that night I'll predict 300 yards and 2 TD's.
*

I didn't see this thread before the game started and I listened to the "experts" that told me to bench Romo, and the same experts said to start Stafford. I got 1.32 points instead of 15.28 for QB. I'm not listening to those guys anymore. Those same experts ranked Denver above Phili on Defense, and I got 1 point instead of 7. My own ignorance benched Hines Ward for Malcom Floyd and I got 4.8 points instead of 10.8. Oh well, I still won. smile.gif
Unfortunately, the Lions did not, though. That was a very upsetting call, and I don't agree with it. I thought a completion was control of the ball and both feet down. In this case, it was control, both feet, knee, thigh, hand, then ball. He had control the entire time until he was getting up to celebrate.
What's done is done, though. It's over and we can't change it, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating. I think it should have been a touchdown.

I just hope Stafford comes back for next Sunday. Stafford, Best and Megatron will destroy Phili!

Yup, I heard no surgery as well. There is no way the Lions let Stafford see the field at all in the next 4 weeks. I would of started Romo over Stafford, and Ward over Floyd. I got crushed this week in fantasy. Edge layed a whooping down on me laugh.gif. I agree, that call was horrible. I hope they change it after this year. I guess it's just Detroit sports year to get screwed over on calls.

Posted by: yilduz Sep 15 2010, 07:58 PM

Well, they're still saying no surgery, but I guess Hill has been confirmed as week 2 starter. Romo is my starter, and will be most of the season, but now if Stafford is going to be out a few weeks, I may be in trouble. Romo has week 4 bye, which is when I need Stafford most. I guess I'm going to the free agent pool. >_<

Wow! What happened to the NFL's lovable losers? You guys look awesome this year!

Good luck to ya! If you keep playing like this, and get a few lucky breaks, I'm seeing a 7-9 or 8-8 record.

Jahvid Best = Beast.

Thank you. I'm hoping we can squeeze out a 5-11 record without Stafford for at least the next three games. Jahvid Best is quite the athlete.

I'm sure many of you have already seen the highlights of the "shootout at Ford Field today". It was a tight one near the end, but the Eagles pulled out the victory 35-32. The Lions were in and out of the game at different points, near the end Hill hooked up with Johnson, and Best added one of his three touchdowns on the day to close the gap from 17 to 3. The Lions then attempted and recovered an onside kick with less than 2 minutes to go, but the magic stopped there. Hill couldn't connect on any of his 4 passes during the series and the Lions turned the ball over. As Cardcraze pointed out, the Lions are looking a lot better than most people expected. Next week's game is @ Minnesota against the old man.

Highlights and full stats from today can be seen here:

Hugely disappointed in today's loss. I was moving from Oregon to Nevada today so I missed the game, but I did see the highlights after I got here. I'm VERY glad I chose to start Jahvid Best over Matt Forte in my fantasy league today! But wish I would have benched Chris Johnson. I really didn't want to play him against Pittsburgh's defense, but was afraid that he might do well and I'd look like an idiot for benching Chris Johnson. tongue.gif

Anyway... Best... Wow... I wish I could have seen that performance. So close to pulling off the come from behind win. I wish Stafford would have been playing, he's an awesome clutch player. Last week and this week both came down to the final seconds of the game, but lost because Hill cannot connect when the pressure is on (well, that and the refs hate Calvin Johnson)

With such close games against decent teams, I'm expecting Lions to win some games when Stafford gets back. Before the season began, I estimated 8-8, but always noted that 8-8 prediction is only valid if Stafford stays healthy. Now that he's out, it's tough to make a prediction because so much of my confidence is in him and I'm not sure when he'll be back. Once we can get a passing attack clicking, and as long as we leave Jahvid "Beast" out of his cage, the offense should rock!

I'm just so sick of saying "maybe next season" all the time. We need Stafford back so we can start winning some football games!

Forgot to update last week. If you haven't already heard, the Lions dropped yet another game to the Packers today in Lambeau, 28-26. The Lions have now not won a game in 20 years there. Both defenses played a great game, if you can believe that. Both QB's played average, but it was Rodgers coming out on top. The Packers now move to 3-1 (1-1 in divison), and the Lions move to 0-4 (0-3 in division). It's getting really frusterating, we should be at least 1-3, and also have two other close losses to the Pack and Eagles.

Frustrating? As a Lions fan? I can't imagine. >_<

So close so often... like Schwartz said, they get right on the hump, but can't manage to get over it. They just need a little extra push, and I think that push is Stafford. We need our guy back.

6-31

Posted by: yilduz Oct 10 2010, 03:23 PM

6-44 in an amazing game! Wow!

Awesome job, Lions!

It's hard to credit the defense, offense, or special teams for winning the game because all of them were incredible! I wish I would have started Lions defense in fantasy football, though. They were started in 2.2% of fantasy leagues this week and those owners are doing the happy dance.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Oct 10 2010, 04:47 PM

As Dennis posted, the Lions crushed the Rams today 44-6! They always seem to play well at home. Shaun Hill threw for 3 TD's and 0 INT's, Best and Smith gave us a balanced run attack, and our defense and special teams cleaned up big time highlighted by a 105 yard kickoff return by Stefan Logan. Glad to see that we got to 1-4, hopefully this win can get us back on track.

laugh.gif not too fast. I think we can be 4-12 or 5-11. I'd be happy with that after not having Stafford for the first 5-6 games.

We travel to the Meadowlands to face the Giants tomorrow. Should be a tough test. Game time is 1pm EST.

Go Lions!

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Oct 18 2010, 05:06 PM

Lions dropped a tough game in the Meadowlands this weekend, 28-20. Shaun Hill left the game with a broken arm late in the second quarter and Drew Stanton had to come in. I think he played pretty well for being a third-string. Our penalties are absolutely killing us though, if we can cut down on those, and other dumb mistakes (Burleson's fumble) we can get over the hump. They had a chance to tie the game on two late 4th quarter drives, but both were ended by turnovers (Burleson fumble and Stanton INT). This drops the Lions to 1-5 on the season, giving them a much-needed week off.

Lions win in dramatic fashion over the Redskins! Summary and Link coming soon...

Posted by: ffman Oct 31 2010, 03:54 PM

Great game by Stafford in his comeback! 4 touchdowns.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Oct 31 2010, 07:37 PM

Matthew Stafford's return proved to be a huge lift for the Lions. Stafford turned his game up a notch and threw for 4 TD's, 3 of which were to Calvin Johnson. The Lions defensive line was relentless all game, and it certainly payed off in the end. The Redskins brought in former Bears QB, Rex Grossman, when the Lions had just gone up by 8, late in the 4th quarter. It only took one play for the Lions to welcome him to the game. Pressure from VandenBosch and Avril created a fumble, which was then picked up by Ndamukong Suh and returned for a TD. The Lions looked pretty good all-around today. Our running game could use a little bit more balance between Best and Smith, but other than that we played great. The Lions move to 2-5 on the year (T-3rd) in the NFC North. The Redskins drop to 4-4 on the season. Next Sunday is home vs the Jets on CBS. If the Lions can somehow find a way to win that game, we would then travel to Buffalo and Dallas, which would provide a great possibility for two victories. If we pull off those wins, we would be staring 5-5 right in the face, and possibily a chance at a playoff spot.

Both offense and defense played well for Detroit Sunday. This is starting to look good. With the Vikings and Bears looking terrible and so-so, hopefully the Lions can compete with the Packers and take a playoff spot for the first time since 1753.

Big game today! This game lets the world know if we are big time or not. I actually was going to try and get tickets to this game with my Uncle, but he had a work trip he had to go on, so we figured we'd hold off until later in the season. The Jets travel into Detroit today to meet the Lions and a sold-out Ford Field. Expect to see nothing less than a great game. CBS @ 1PM EST.

Jets- 10 Lions- 7 at half. Our defense is playing pretty well, except for the big play to Braylon Edwards. Our offense looked stellar on the first drive, but hasn't been too great since. Hopefully we can come out re-charged in the 2nd half.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Nov 7 2010, 04:21 PM

Stafford injured. Jets just kicked a FG to tie it up 20-20 as time expired. The Lions get the ball to start OT.

Posted by: 19th Century Indiana Jones Nov 7 2010, 04:28 PM

Lions should have smashed the Jets. The Jets offense is still WAY out of sync.

Posted by: ronaldinho0003 Nov 7 2010, 04:29 PM

A 51 yard strike to Holmes put the Jets in field goal range. Easy kick for Folk and the game is over.

NYJ- 23 Lions- 20.

Stafford...done. NFC North hopes...done. Season...done.

If they ran the ball on that third down; if they hadn't taken that penalty; if Hanson wasn't injured and made the PAT that Suh missed; if Stafford didn't fall on his shoulder and re-injure it, keeping him out of the final drive. We can come up with excuses all day (and I'll be right there with you tongue.gif ) but it doesn't change the fact that they've lost yet another very close game.

Whether they're taking too many penalties, getting injured, or not properly managing the clock, they can't seem to finish. Once they can manage that, they'll be a top team.

In any case, the Lions are playing the Bills next week so let's look to that. Buffalo is currently 0-8 and it's an away game for Detroit, so we may finally break this winless road streak!

Yeah! Go Lions!

We should shut him down for the year. Sam Bradford had a similar injury situation to this back at Oklahoma, and now he's fine. We just have to hope he has a healthy recovery and is truly back to 100% before next years preseason game one.

The Lions (2-6) and new starting QB Shaun Hill travel to Buffalo today to take on the Bills (0-8). The Lions always struggle on the road, and the Bills have been right on the hump the past couple of games. Hopefully Hill is back to 100% and can re-start where he left off. Game is scheduled for 1pm EST on FOX.

Prediction: Bills-27 Lions-24

Bills are better then there record shows.

but i see the lions pull it off 35-31

Posted by: yilduz Nov 14 2010, 04:17 PM

Lions are better than their record shows as well. However, penalties and the inability to produce on offense killed them today. I expected them to score a lot on this defense, but they weren't able to. The Bills only scored 14 points, the Lions should have outscored that by a lot - but only came out with 12. They missed the 2-point conversion at the end of the game.

Yet another hugely disappointing loss. Every game is close and they can't manage to get that little extra. When will things go our way?

You got to hand it to the Bills, they played tough at home. And the Lions were up against it from the get-go with Stafford out.

I agree with you guys. WAY too many penalties today. Plus, not having Stafford out there really uhrt us. Hill didn't look a 100% at all, a couple of times he looked scared to throw it more than 10 yards down the field. Yet, another very disappionting loss. We drop to 2-7 on the year...*sigh*.

Yeah, his fear of throwing the ball was really starting to frustrate me. Too many times they were third and long, and he would only throw a few yards. It was driving me nuts.

I also hope that Suh and Calvin Johnson aren't injured. That's the last thing we'd need - more injuries to our main guys.

Posted by: yilduz Nov 21 2010, 05:37 PM

So... The Lions were ahead at halftime, 10-7. However, they couldn't hold on and was destroyed in the second half. 19-35 was the final score and Detroit loses, yet again, on the road. They fall to 2-8 on the season and these last few weeks have been hugely disappointing.

All we can do is leave this game behind and look forward to the annual Thanksgiving game. Let's kick some New Englanders back from whence they came.

We looked pretty bad yesterday...

I'm dreading Thursday, I'm almost positive we'll get totally embarassed at home. Without Stafford it's clear the Lions are a completely different football team. We need him to get and stay healthy. The hair pulling/horse collar call really hurt us yesterday. Then the punt return for the TD, (which showed on the replay that the runner had stepped out of bounds), really gave Dallas all the momentum and eventually the game.

I can't believe the Lions start winning games (four in a row to end the season) and the Lions thread is dead. What gives, guys?

I can't wait for next season. Hopefully Stafford and Best can stay healthy. If so, and we get some help in the secondary, Detroit is going to rock the NFC north! Lions are going to the playoffs next year!
