A technical question.

Can the board layout settings be relaxed to allow width sizing based on local browser settings?

I only ask in that I am only getting half of my monitor width in actual display area with the site these days, and I certainly can't be the only one... unsure.gif

In other words, instead of limiting to a given width, set the coding to expand to 100% width based on the local browser settings...

I do as well, I assume you have a widescreen monitor. The display of the page seems to be set up for a regular square monitor. Doesn't really bother me though...just a lot of empty gray space smile.gif

That's the point tho, there's no reason for that, the webpage design layout can be changed to accommodate any resolution based on local settings. So everyone gets the most of what they've got. smile.gif

I think a few months back someone mentioned this problem before, and the answer had something to do with your monitor settings, making sure that you are using the right ones. I forget what the magic numbers are.

Has nothing to do with monitor settings. If you want to see an example of this type of dynamic page layout visit (well almost any big page nowadays, but here's simple one to check it out at)

http://www.ultimatecardboard.com/Forums/index.php

Just visit the site and do a simple resize the browser window - and note what takes place with the text and layout of the page - nothing "falls off the page" it just reorients to fit the available space, nice huh? cool.gif

Thought I'd pass this by for further consideration.

Maybe a selectable "widescreen" or "standard" option could be implemented?

Actually, the best way would be to completely use percentage sized elements so that the entire page is fluid. Then there would be no "option". It would just work for everyone no matter what size of screen they are on.

Ding, ding, ding.

While I like the idea, it's ultimately up to Bob. I'm sure he has numbers on what kinds of browsers people use, their screen resolutions and so on.

I'd be in favor of this. The grey space does sometimes get annoying.

I'm also more thinking in the terms of space the forum has. For instance, we've all seen what happens when someone posts a huge scan: The forum width expands.

I've recommended this in the past and now that I'm Content and Graphics Team Manager, it might be something I look into first: But what do you guys think of an automatic image resizer? If you post an image that's too large for the width of the forum, it resizes it to fit, but allows you to click on it to show the full size.

I like that idea as the large images are a pain, and imagine worse for someone on a slower connection.

I like this as well, just not sure about the possibility of it in terms of programming stuff.

I guess you could just write a script which detects images in posts, accesses the image, and resizes it, but this would need to be a script which runs constantly, and could take up a lot of memory (where will all the resized images be stored). Not sure if I'm right on this, but just looking at the other side of the argument.

I'm not sure that would work too well without a major modification to the forum programming. You would likely need an entirely new DB for this to work. Either that, or you would need a script that checks every single post on the fly. As Josh said, that would use quite a bit of resources.

I'm not saying it shouldn't, or couldn't, be done but it might not be worth it.

Oh, I don't disagree on that as the best coding option, just providing another option I have seen used in other forum situations.
