Looking over some of the member names that are being chosen, I thought it would be interesting if some of you with the not-so-obvious names shared the story or reason for your name.

Anyone willing to share the reasons?

When I was starting all over, I was trying to decide what to collect. I wanted it to be worth something. I went after a few high-end, slabbed 1970s Nolan Ryan cards just to wet my feet. I liked them, but it wasn't much of a challenge. If one had the money, they could purchase things at the snap of a finger. There was no challenge in that. Especially if items like that were offered everyday. One day I was stumped because I wanted to collect, but not haphazardly like before. Stumped, I browsing through eBay in search of ideas. I happen to be watching Raiders Of The Lost Ark and then a phrase from the movie hit me: "I hear you are.... an obtainer of rare antiquities." Hey! Why not build a collection like those I see at Sotheby's and Leland's? It doesn't have to be a big collection or mint. Just focused enough that it won't have any stray pieces. Hmmm.... But I need some sort of theme. I looked at other forums and I see that half the collectors are player collectors. Hmmm.... After researching card prices and players of the 19th century, I found out that I could afford a few of those cards within a few years' time. And they are truly rare and made scarce by collectors who like to hold on to these rare items. These 19th century issues are subject not just to collectors, but to people who buy classic cars, diamonds, and football teams. You can pretty much throw the book out on items of the famous players. With further research, I finally selected to collect the affordable issues of Mike "King" Kelly. On my webpage (under construction) I will write a few excerpts taken from "Slide, Kelly, Slide", the book written about him.

And with the name? I will collect any 19th century item that catches my eye, but I am after 4 specific items. I already have one (The Jovedos Golden Idol). Three more to go..... The Holy Grail, The Shankara Stone, and The Ark of The Covenant. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif dry.gif

Pre-war cards(baseball, horse racing)

Collect for pleasure and you will always find happiness.

Very cool! Looking forward to hearing (and seeing) more about your collection or "quest".

And, yes, someone with "Indiana Jones" in the user name was one of the ones that caught my attention and prompted this thread. wink.gif

I use this name for almost anything, it all started when i satarted my yahoo email account. I am a big surfer and one of my favorite surf companies is Wave Riding Vehicles. So I adapted the initials WRV and the 01 is because someone already had WRV. So i use this name on all my messageboards and everyting else.

By the way i found this website to be the best with the message boards...keep up the good work and also the information on this website is great.

thanks

Cool reason for the name! Wouldn't have figured that one out.

Thanks for the positive feedback as well. We're really just getting started with the forums/blogs, so we should see more and more collectors joining us. We have plenty of other things planned for the site as well. It just comes down to finding the time. wink.gif

Thanx. I have three websites, but I am trying to decide which one looks best. I might just devote one website to 19th century/pre-1930 stuff and make the other post-1950. The third I will discard. I just received three Ogden Cigarettes jockey cards. I hope to post pictures some time this weekend. I also have my avatar original coming in. smile.gif

Well, I played baseball in a predominantly hispanic league here in Southern California for many years. My teammates nicknamed me "zurdo", which loosely means lefty since I'm left-handed. The name stuck and I've been known as Lefty ever since. Shan is a shorter version of my last name, Shannon. This is an interesting thread. It's always fun to see how others come up with their names.

My screen name isn't that unique....but a lot of people ask me about my e-mail address. k9six33@yahoo.com. As stated in my introduction I am a police officer and I am currently working on getting our agencies first ever narcotic detector dog (Lord knows we need one!!!!!). The six33 represents my badge number which is 633. In case anyone e-mails me that is the story behind the name.

It's called Golden City baseball league. We played at most of the high school fields in SoCal. I played in the AAA Division which was the highest level. I can't really compare it as far as the level of play. We had some guys that went on to the minors, but it was mainly recreational. The cool thing for me was that I got to meet my all-time favorite manager, Tommy Lasorda. His wife, Jo, came to speak at our opening day ceremonies one season. They live in Fullerton, which is very close to most of the fields we played at. I had the chance to speak with her briefly after the ceremony and told her how much I admire Tommy and that I've always been a diehard Dodger fan. She was very sweet and polite. She said she would pass the message along to Tommy for me. Needless to say, I was shocked when they showed up for my team's game the following weekend. He stayed for about 4 innings and chatted with the teams in the dugout. It was amazing.

The name SportsMan29- I am a Sports Fanatic. I watch Sports All Day. The 29, I got that from Kevin Harvick. But I no longer watch NASCAR. Thats my SN on other sites, as well. I would like it to be SportsMan34, the 34 after David Ortiz. But SN is pretty catchy to fellow members on others sites.
