QUOTE(19th Century Indiana Jones @ Aug 23 2009, 12:57 PM)
Hi Kelly. I'm Rob.

You mean criteria? I compared what they have already acquired as compared to the general population of collectors.

It seems a few might have an inferiority complex if they felt they were not touted as a super collector. That should not be the case. A super collector is the exception to the rule, not the norm. Most likely, a super collector luckily fell into a niche where everyone else was ignoring OR (as in most cases) had the funds and agility to grab items before anyone else. It's a mix of timing, luck, and finance. And too many make the mistake of letting their collection define who they are, using it as a symbol of financial status rather than what it really is - just a personal pastime/hobby with some luckier than others when it comes to a spending budget.

I know I will never be a super collector. Should I be depressed? Heck no. There are a lot of cards I would deem as ugly and could not stand to have them, no matter how rare or what the demand is for it. I do not have the funds, nor the time, nor the inclination to be one. Limited funds? Well, then that is where imagination should be put to use. And I have put it to use. I sent it in as a farce and next thing I know it was published in Beckett - in an  issue about super collectors, nonetheless. I had the SMALLEST Ichiro collection and yet it was placed right after the article on the Ichiro super collector who had everything. And it emphasized that you don't need to be a super collector to be a true collector. There it is, published in black & white for hundreds of thousands to see. My small collection. Embarrassed? A little when compared to the super collector. But still proud that even though my collection was microscopic because of limited funds, it was unique when compared to the larger collections.

Do you have any criteria on what you think a super collector should be?
*

Nice to meet you Rob! And great answer by the way. I think you have hit on alot of the major points involved, and I especially love the Ichiro tale. That is great and I fully agree, some of my favorite collections are hybrids of what alot of people consider the norm. I know alot of collectors where personal pride in what they have acquired and joy in each achievement overshadows others who just blah, blah, blah as they land everything ever made. I truly wish I had the passion for this hobby I once had and what some show day in and out.

One of your comments sticks out to me like a sore thumb. That of collectors often letting their collections define who they are. Sometimes the shameless self promotion of how great their collection is taints it to a negative light. A super collector does not just refer to the cardboard they have hoarded. It is easy to tell when the passion is not there for the hobby and when it is simply a boat load of cardboard that could as easily be coins, stamps, cars, or whatever other collectible they chose to showcase themselves in front of.

Can't belive I never posted in this thread.

My current and possibly final status in the Hobby isn't listed.

Retired - just trying to finish some olders sets & get rid of all of the extra stuff that's gathered over the years, after that I'll just fade away into the sunset.

I'll guess I'll remain as a player collector, although additions to all three player collections have been quite slim lately (Sosa, Wright, Lee).

Team collector slightly fits the bill in the football department, although I go after very little and don't chase the entire team.

I'll stick with that mostly with a pinch of Player collector and several healthy dollops of HOF.

In other words, I don't really fit into "just one" of those categories.

Upon further thinking and debating I believe I fall into three of these categories. (AU/GU Collector, Player Collector, Team Collector)
I collect from two teams (NY Yankees and NY Giants) but my collection has been narrowed only to include certain players from these teams with a particular focus on Autos or Patches of these players. I used to have a broad stroke in regards to players from these teams but it made my focus more than I personally or financially would like.
That being said though I am a player collector in regards to my favorite ball player of all time, Don Mattingly. Also I dabble (lightly) after Patches and Autos of Donavan Tate.
Although it seems getting the guys that I like from these teams is like pulling teeth as they are NY teams and sell well. Most of my additions tend to come from card shops or places such as Ebay.
Basically I confuse myself.. laugh.gif

these are estimates of my collection. i have not counted everything. but i feel these #'s are close to the range i put!

im not sure if i have 80% of all edgerrin cards. i would say closer to about 60% maybe more but theres like 4,500+ listed in beckett. i probably have about 50% of all his 1/1's. about 80%-90% of all his rookie year card most of the rest being 1/1's. every base rookie card he has 100%. 70%-80% of all his base. about 50%-60% of his autos and game-used. and countless things not listed in beckett!!! but i still consider my self a super collector. it my only true focus. and most of whats held me back, is stuff not surfacing on eBay. and i just came to the site back in august. before that i never traded. but im only little over 2 years in so.......
