Collector Zone _ Football Marketplace _ How does this happen???

Posted by: labguy42 Jan 18 2013, 04:24 PM

I have a very large collection of Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, and Bronko Nagurski cards and this is one of my favorites. How can this happen the same exact card ##. I spend a bunch of $$ on this stuff so the fact the there is the same card with the same serial number really concerns me. What does everyone think?

They are both mine. I bought the ungraded one in 2002 and the graded one last week

the gold foil stamping looks different on the graded card, different point size or is it just an optical illusion.

I think your graded one has a problem! not sure what it is but the foil stamping looks off to me!

is it possible that it was from a black box trade show break or a national promo

I have looked it over very closely and there are no stamps. I have some of the exclusive stuff as well and they are usually stamped.

It almost looks to me like the graded one is faked??? Did you look at both under a magnifier to see if you can see any differences? The logos on the back for the NFL, Donruss, and NFLPA look less clear on the closer one, could be the camera angle causing this.

The Black Boxes in the first year of Panini were not stamped.

I have some americana stuff from that black box that is not unique in anyway except I know where they came from and they are #/5

Im sure that the stamping is different size judging by the pics, you have them there in hand does the point size look bigger?

it does appear to be a different font and the "2" in the 25 is definitely different.

Im telling ya, the graded copy is either a back doored promotional card or came from a black box from either 08 or 09 the first two years panini managed it although I do not possess anything # higher than 10 from those black boxes (and I might have the years wrong it might be 09 & 10) just becuase of the richard kiel auto i have from it makes me think 08 . There was also a grab bag thing given away at the las vegas summit for shop owners and dealers in those first couple of years (old hawaii trade show) and those were not stamped either but I cant remember if I posses anything from panini from those.

what year is that from? 2010?

Posted by: labguy42 Jan 19 2013, 08:45 AM

It is from 2002

That stamping is way off on the graded card. I'd say its stampted outside the factory. You would think a grader would catch something like that.

Ok so that is an old hawaii trade show grab bag card!

Posted by: labguy42 Jan 19 2013, 05:04 PM

If it is a Hawaiian trade card show, I am cool with that. Wondering why Beckett did not put that in their description. If that is the case, I have the show card and pack pulled card numbered the same..

I believe one is a chinese counterfeit

First check this card out! Ebay 310563098486 Not sure if you need it but I came a crossed it.

OK now what I think! laugh.gif tongue.gif

The first one came in a pack! The second one is what I call a walk-out-the-backdoor card. A real card, but not put in packs. Tons have made it out from every brand. Like the collectors choice that should have #ings and dont and people write in the #ing. Same with Fleer and Pacific. Not as much with Donruss/Playoff but there are still lots. I have a few with no numberings. And some stamped promo or with odd numbering/letters. I have seen several cards that never had a numbering and somehow pop up with one (and some good ones at that!) look just like the real thing. I don't think that is the case here. The font one the second likes kinda like others I have. The first one is like clean and straight and the second is kinda curvy or swoopy. Which is just like a few that I have including the ones that say promo. I also have some cards where the numbering is one way and I have 2-3 others of the same card and the numbering is a different style. And I really doubt those are fake, just being a common jersey card /500 or something worth a couple bucks. But he are some pics to show you, look close at the promo ones and you will see the font is very close to your second one. Also I don't think its a hawaii promo. I have several of those type cards and they are always stamped! I included pics of a couple of those. All the nations same way and all the Chicago ones same way. There might be some other there that are not stamped but everyone I have seen of those "trade" type shows or conventions have the stamps. Some foil printed some stamped into the card. And most times those cards are numbered to something that the reg version in packs is not. Like if the reg verion is /25 it would be /5 or something like that. It could be a trade show card but I wouldn't put my money on it! I think its a backdoor deal. The has been a couple sellers one ebay that have a bunch listed, when they list them. I haven't seen a seller with them like that in a year or better. But like one seller had a Brady contenders rookie ticket with no auto and no auto stamp. Same time they had a bunch of the cards with no numberings. And all there cards listed where like that and all were donruss/playoff, so they had to pretty much go out the backdoor to have that many. They had tons of them! But anyway thats my thoughs and here are the pics.
