Collector Zone _ Everything Else _ What are you currently thinking Thread!

Posted by: redwing40 Nov 27 2012, 11:59 AM

Like the title says, What are you currently thinking? Figure I. could start this up to get members chatting, please keep it clean! wink.gif

I'll start this off....

Eating a turkey sandwich again for lunch, anyone want to trade smile.gif

Posted by: northicehero99 Nov 27 2012, 12:13 PM

Thinking where do I go in this hobby? Too much "stuff" taking up too much space that I never look at, so do I dump it and take a loss, sell it piecemeal, or what? I still want to collect certain things and keep certain things, but well I am just realizing I have too much, some of which I would like to keep, some which I think I have no attachment to. So what do I do?

Posted by: captkirk42 Nov 27 2012, 12:36 PM

?Wha? You trying to turn TCC into Facebook? unsure.gif

@Brian you could start your condensing by handing over all your Capitals, Orioles and Nationals (Wash. Senators) over to me. wink.gif cool.gif

I hate seeing the word "dump" or "trash" associated with trading cards. If they are to be doomed to someplace other than a collectors hands I say bury them in a recycling bin. They are cardboard so then maybe they will be recycled as a McDonald's burger box. laugh.gif

Posted by: redwing40 Nov 27 2012, 02:17 PM

@Brian-Feel the same way sometimes, but figure I might need to build a house with them some day, but really all my stuff will be handed down to my kids

@Kirk- FB? Lol, that would mean we would have over a million member's!

Home bound in a hour, long day at work posting here on TCC

Trying to see into the future to Wend. night to assertain the winning Lotto numbers.

Could you imagine 500 Mill, I'd go the 20 year route to insure a big paycheck every year & to keep the Gov. from getting half right off the bat.

Wish I had a crystal ball

Yep the yearly installments are the way to go. Sure there is still tons of tax on it, but at least it isn't 1/2 right off the bat, and you actually end up getting less if you take the one lump sum. Also 500 Mil spread out over 20 years is a little harder to spend all at once.

Of course with winning the lottery you automatically gain about 50 million cousins and lost relatives you didn't know you had the night before the drawing. biggrin.gif

I did not know Suh from the Lions was a kicker? laugh.gif

Posted by: edgerrin32 Nov 28 2012, 02:42 AM

WOW. I am thinking of a lot.

Selling off stuff I don't want.

Kids.

Where my next sick Edgerrin edition is going to come from and what it will be.

I might go back to driving a Taxi.

COMC.com sales sounded like a good deal, but I don't think they were and the site messing up, and not being able to send offers on cards that were on sale. Just made me get excited for nothing and then got me mad.

Needed to come up with some money to go on vacation. BAD!! I am wayyyy over due for one, only like 10+ years since I went on one, and im only 27 lol.

Need a new set of wheels.

Wanting the stuff I have listed on ebay to sell.

Want more Legos to sell.

Some personal stuff. Well a lot of personal stuff, not really some!

Christmas coming up and trying to finish that up.

Needed to go out for some drinks for a night but cant. (not a big drinker, just want to go shoot some pool and have a couple).

Got a bunch of projects I need to get done.

Have some things I need to buy (other then cards), but a little strapped on cash. Got money but just not enough to get everything I need.

Sad Jersey Shore is ending!

Wondering what my next big move in life will be. Which way am I going to go.

Family and friends.

Yea a lot.... lol Just trying to knock a thing off my list here and there. But there is so much. It like every time I knock something off my list, 2 more things get up on it. So yea thats what im thinking.

Posted by: captkirk42 Nov 28 2012, 09:32 AM

@Jason,
Wow that is a LOT of stuff. Your list reminds me I need to add a bunch of stuff onto Ebay (not just cards). It don't get sold by itself just sitting around in boxes or in a closet.

RE: New set of wheels. I should probably think about that as well. I've got a 2002 Ford Focus and 10 year old cars don't last very much longer. In some ways I'm surprised it has lasted this long.

Yea I still have a bunch more to get put up on there, but it takes a lot of time to list it all. lol

Wheels. Yea our transmission just went out. Ours is a 2003 neon. Junk car to begin with. Plus when we bought it we didn't know but it used to be a delivery car for a local pharmacy! Yea stop and go, on and off all day long. We found out like a year after we had it. rolleyes.gif But this will be the 3rd tranny we put in in about the 6 or so years we have had it. Plus we just got 2 new tires put on it the day before the tranny went out lol. And about a month before that we had to replace the control shift mod thing. So you fix it and something else goes out right after lol. I miss my Lincoln town car. It was a beast, but it ran and I fit in it very comfortable. laugh.gif Im only like 6'4 so my knees are not all jammed in the dash board or anything. blink.gif

Sorry to hear that the OT demons came back. ON the good hand that means extra $$ Right? Or are you on Salary and $OT don't mean jack?

Posted by: captkirk42 Dec 15 2012, 04:56 PM

Yesterday and today I got a ton of things yesterday I got a package with a ton of Mascot stuff from some guy who had read my http://captkirk42.blogspot.com out of the blue emailed me (about a week ago) and offered to send me some mascot stuff for free asked nothing in return, just cleaning out his Mascot Collection Binder of dupes. Well there were some cards, postcards a couple of 8x10s (or 8x11.5) a paperback kids book some of them signed by the mascot a couple of them personalized to him (David). Mascots of each sport Baseball, Football, Hockey and Basketball some professional some minor league and some College.

Then today I got some of my Ebay and sportlots stuff including a random 70some card lot of Orioles cards from 1980s on up to current.

I understand them having rules, but one would think the moderators would cut someone slack and close/delete the topic on the first attempt and send the member a pm explaining the rule. Then if the tried again suspend, then ban if tried again? Not my site but everyone makes mistakes and something like that could be easily seen as a mistake the first time.

Hey, but at least the crappy officiating is back to par. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Pens were outplayed by the Leafs the other night, but the officiating was horrible, Leafs had 8 PPs to the Pens had 5? Know they had a few early, but did not realize it was 5, either way too many wishy washy calls especially the boarding ones. I won't go on a rant, just will say I didn't miss that part of the game during the lockout.

I think I've narrowed my allegiance down to two remaining teams:
Vancouver Canucks
Philadelphia Flyers

I'm thinking why do you have 2 choices between some (awful, imo) teams when you can go with the Blue Jackets, or Predators?? Hehe. Yes Steve, Blues are on fire.

Where is the current state of the hobby and where will it be in a few years?

Looking at the economy, the overproduction, the overuse of Event Used, current postal rates, etc. I am not seeing much of a hobby in the future. Current postal rates have all but killed low-end traders, as if it wasn't bad enough that Ebay and Paypal had sucked the life out of low-end selling and even mid-range selling. The postal rate to Canada doubled to $6.55 for a bubble mailer, that is going to pretty much kill my hockey trading, unless a lot of people move south of the border (not Mexico laugh.gif ).

UHOH That sounds like you received a dead soldier, or a severly wounded one.

I don't know if this will help but I've noticed that some of the sportlots dealers I get cards from (who always seem to send everything in PWEs) will sandwich the card in heavier cardboad stock. Usually from a post office priority envelope or some common breakfast cearal box and sometimes from heavier corrugated boxes.

Of course what really drives me nuts is the ones (and ebay sellers) who will put the card in a "card saver" w/no penny sleeve and TAPE the saver closed with regular tape and no barrier to prevent the tape from sticking to the top edge of the card(s).

Posted by: urbanmonk Feb 19 2013, 06:15 PM

Seen ones shipped that way reinforced, but it doesn't always work and have seen too many messed up bubble mailers even that got stuck in the sorting system. Also GU cards crease (around the window of piece) real easy as they not uniform in thickness always, so shipping that way it goes thru their rollers on the sorting and as they don't bend it puts pressure on the card and can cause it to crease even in a toploader, hence why I go overkill on my packaging. Not worth the risk to me, so just puts a major damper on low end trading out of country, as not worth $7 in postage for $15 in cards even let alone less than that.

Posted by: redwing40 Feb 21 2013, 06:32 AM

just wish it was cheaper to make one card trades, dont mind trading in the states, but out of state trading for me is done unless worth it, so yeah, PWE for out of the USA will be my only option, hate to start charging shipping on trades, not right as I would make a trade to Canada and it will cost me $6 something and when my card comes, it only cost them $2 to mail to me, dont get it!

Posted by: urbanmonk Feb 21 2013, 08:31 AM

Well what I got from the main PO yesterday as I can no longer mail handwritten customs forms from the contracted postal station (USPS really perturbing me right now), so had to go to the main PO where they usually only have one clerk in a town of 50,000 people.
A large envelope is considered a package if any of the following apply:

over 3/4" thick
not uniform in thickness
is rigid

so their definition of what I get online of rigid is still:

QUOTE
A mailpiece is flexible if it can bend at least 1 inch vertically without being damaged and it does not contain a rigid insert. If the large envelope is over 10 inches long, it must be able to flex at least 2 inches.

Which by that if you bend a toploader 1 inch vertically there is a good chance the card can get creased, especially with a GU piece as those really susceptible to creasing in the GU window. So again it comes down to normal USPS baloney that each PO will have it's own idea on the rules and will charge different and tell you different things, but I have no faith in them following Non-machinable even if you paid for it, as can't see them doing anything by hand until it gets stuck in their sorting machines which at that point it is too late.

Also according to her she didn't think it had tracking unlike what the website made it sound like it was included now in the new postage rate, guess I will have to try the Customs Number once it is rec'd to see as that is only number on the receipt. So a 4.7oz. package cost me $8.55 to send to Canada. USPS is going to lose lots of revenue from this IMHO, but doubtful that they will figure that out and change their rates, as I can't recall them ever lowering price on anything. Only plus now is that in country packages now have tracking included, so you don't have to pay extra for DC anymore to confirm it was dlvd.

Went to PO yesterday to mail an item to Canada. Cost $6.55 for package, but worse than that was a 10 minute wait as clerk had to hand type all the customs information into the system. He explained that is why it went up in price and it is still "cheaper" than the competition. So I am thinking what competition was he talking about? laugh.gif tongue.gif

In addition, he said there is no "delivery confirmation" even though they go through this process, so now I am wondering who came up with this idea?

Nice they cut down the number of people at the windows, only to make them spend a longer amount of time processing customers. Nice that we live in an age of computers, but we make the process less efficient. You would think when you reduce the number of workers you would want to make things easier and faster, not longer and slower? laugh.gif

Well the competition is UPS and FedEx, neither of which is reasonable in price. Still no reason for the Postal Service to double their rates.

I was wondering what she was doing typing so much. That explains why USPS won't let them accept hand written ones at the contracted one, they have a computer that you can do one online for an extra dollar. So maybe there is a way to do it online, but then you have to have a scale to enter the weight and all that. So they trying to keep tabs on who ships what where and who it goes to? Rather fishy if you ask me, and totally no logic in the "it is better now" as it costs more/takes more time/and still no tracking even though online makes it sound like it. What a joke.

Posted by: sahetu Feb 21 2013, 05:41 PM

Wait wait wait.

How is my small town post office better here? lol

I expect city ones to be speedy, efficient. I mailed 11 packages all over the world today.

Ones using this type of envelope:

user posted image

Cost around $2.25 for what I send, which is a few ounces (stamps, postcards, covers, etc). I could easily send the same with a GU or a couple other cards in loaders, even reinforcing with more cracker box cardboard.

Now, a yellow padded envelope, yeah.. $8 was today's winner winner.

However, I never had to type customs slips? I write them out, in fact the clerk in my rinky-dink town insisted on showing me how to fill out the new slips with a pen.

Posted by: urbanmonk Feb 21 2013, 07:39 PM

Consistency with the Post Offices is a problem, as you may be able to do one there there and they will tell me I can't send it that way here. But I think sending a GU in something like that has a very good chance of showing up creased in the GU window personally.

You can do it online if you have a account with the PO, with the Custom Forms, just need to have a Form on hand for the Number to type in on the web site, this way they will just weight it and scan it, still cost a arm and leg and a couple of fingers laugh.gif

Paul, it is just a hobby, that can be put aside here and there. One of your drawbacks this year is due to no new rookies and very few new products this year which is probably impacting your feelings and the number of cards to collect. Have you tried focusing on a specific player or set? Sometimes that gets me out of my funk.

Yeah, maybe so Brian, plus ITG Motown didn't thrill me one bit, as you can tell I didn't get any yet, and the teletubby player the Wings picked up for 12-13 RCs laugh.gif
plus no Canada trades are hurting me, which was one of my main trade ports, $6 kills me for mailing and the process I have to go through over a one card trade
I'm not the set collector, I would like too, but don't have the time or money, I mostly get the Wings out of a certain set, and shoot for the high end RCs, which 11-12 is almost wrapped up! still looking for the Brendan Smiths The Cup RC I guess!
hopefully I will get out of this funk, sure everyone goes through it at some point, at least glad there's the Box breaks here, that keeps me going, wish we had Dwights Low Budget one going again, gave me more trading power wink.gif

*

I say blame Dwight, it's all his fault. laugh.gif jk

Yeah, I miss the LB break, but that one was tough as you never knew if you would get your team and I have enough non-Pens stuff. laugh.gif

Set building doesn't have to be expensive, you can build Score, boxes from 11/12 are as cheap as $20ish each, so not too expensive to build for a nice 550 card set.

Interesting thought in the shower this morning:

Words are just well words, even the "dirty" and foul ones are just the transcript of the sound patterns we use to communicate with each other. The Problem is that often they are used to hurt others, or are misinterpreted and twisted by others.

Sorry for getting too philosophical, but those were my thoughts from this morning. unsure.gif

I actually, well I cant say.

She may have been the most perfectly built young woman I had seen in a long time

about 100 lbs 5'5"

beautiful freckled alabaster skin, just a perfect hue of red not frizzy and not too long, gorgeous smile, green eyes..a voice that would make a dead man rise!

Id say 22ish..

and walking strut.. OUCH!

I forgot I had a cell phone with video and picture capability. sad.gif

as I coined this phrase years ago

a twenty on a ten!

Taking a break from collecting, and making decisions on if I will come back here, I feel like change wont happen here, I know what can be done, but no effort, or anything I say will change things, and if I don't come back, think really hard of why I left and the things I ever posted to make the site better, and I'm not talking about access to what the mods cant can and cant do to fix the homepage!

He removed himself from the Data Base as only option he had for leaving the Team, and hasn't been back since at all, and seems to be the best for him actually, he found a Vintage Forum he goes to sometimes (what he was only collecting anyway). Life keeping him busy, we play Email tag occasionally still.

Just was time for me to join the rest of the folks that have stepped down, as I was overdue for it for quite some time now actually. Will come here still, just not as much as I used to as I'm mostly into Hockey now, and I have another place I been hanging out at and keep myself busy there with similar things wink.gif

Today I am remembering my wife's mean grandmother who passed away at 7am this morning. When she began her stay in a nursing home (Oct 2013), all her children, one son and three daughter, seemingly abandoned her. It was sad, so me and my wife would see her 4x a week to feed her. We became the unofficial contact person because no one else wanted the responsibility.

The ONLY wish all her children wanted was for her to make it thru Chinese New Year. Grandma granted their wish and died a day after the Lunar New Year, January 31st.

She was 92 years old. RIP "Ah Pou"

A "I told you so" moment....Ultimate Warrior drops dead the day after RAW. Just watching him struggle in ring on Monday Night RAW with his speech and his attempts at his signature rope shaking made you feel like he was using every ounce of energy in his body and that "how sad it would be if he drop dead on camera" ... a day later "off camera" it happened... He got everything off his chest at the WWE HOF over the weekend and then decided to leave us....sooooo sad.
