Hey all! Been quite awhile since I have posted here...don't know how the site is doing...especially since I see the same names as always..

I have continued hitting craigslist...and last week I found an auction that I went to..Tons of nascar cars and starting lineups..neither of which I deal with...but also TONS of unopened boxes from the 90s and sets from the 80s and 90s...I dropped $146..anyone want to know what I got for the money??

Seriously what did you get?

Even though the 1990s were the peak of the "Junk Wax" years when you stop to think about it. 20 years have past since they were produced, the kids who are getting into collecting now (OK it isn't many but there are a few out there) are starting to appreciate the cards from those years. There are some pretty nice designs. Also for those of who started a long hiatus from the hobby around that time there are still plenty of base sets to acquire.

Alright...I have some time tonight to start sharing...sorry Ace...no SP or SPX, but I also tried to stay away from those extremely over produced products as well...but I agree with Kirk, there are still cards out there that are still worth something and are making a resurgence.

The auction started with the Nascar and starting lineups and some misc..so it was about 2 hours before I really got involved...though I did pick up a Babe Ruth Frank Thomas starting lineup package for $3 and a flat of 20 of the McDonalds Beanies to be used for my niece for potty training rewards....that cost a buck.

Once they finally got to the cards...they started with uncut rolls of sheets from 88-94. Some guy bought them for $2.50 each. I had checked out the boxes they used to keep the rolls from rolling and I had been told they were just commons...but I saw better. There were a lot of parallels and star cards in there...and some bricks and I know you all know what I mean..ugh..but enough that I got 2 boxes for $6. Some of the cards I recall pulling out of there were about 8 AROD 94 UD RCs and 2 Jordans as well. There are also a lot of Electric Diamonds (including Ripkens) and some inserts including about 20 Mantle Longshots (Mantle included) and whole slew of Stars....more to come...

Next they moved on to the only "old cards" there....they had about 6 stacks of cards from the 50s and 60s...there was a...grandma age woman I think is fair to say..that had bid against me already and I let her get the largest of the stacks for $8 (my bad)...but I got the next choice at $6 for a stack and I took 3....so for $18 I got 172 cards from 1958-1962. Now granted..only 2 cards are listed in Beckett...but I was surprised at how many would grade as VG-Ex/NM. Many of them are in very nice condition...for about 10 cents apiece. The only notable one is a 1960 Leaf Aparcio.

I suppose I should mention there were about 13 bidders at the auction. I knew my main competition would be a local dealer around here, he sells a lot on line as Chuckssports so I knew he would be buying a lot, but luckily he wasn't pushing prices badly at all, though he would take the remaining lots once prices got incredibly low and interest was gone (read 91 Donruss boxes and the such)...

Next up they did some sets...from 81-94....I only got 2, should have gotten more, but there was so much yet to come in the auction I didn't want to blow my allotment too early (though I took $400 and only spent $146). The sets I did get were 81 Fleer and 85 Donruss hand collated for $6 each. should have grabbed the 85 topps as well...but I didn't. 84 Donruss went for $25 and I liked that one as well...

Next went unopened boxes of baseball...This is where I was going as large as I dared...I ended up with 20 boxes for about $90...throughout the auction...but I will come back to them...

after the boxes they headed over to the football table where I picked up a few more unopened boxes again...then Chuck took what was left on the table...much to my dismay. There were a few boxes of "commons" that I had scouted out and I thought they were just doing unopened boxes..i was about to say something to him to see if he really wanted them when he seemed to balk , the auctioneer noticed and asked if he wanted them as well..."just the wax" A silent sigh of relief!

Bidding started again at $3 a box...I waited for 10 seconds before I offered $5 for the lot of 4 boxes...and had no competition (STEAL OF THE AUCTION) I had quickly looked through the lot again and noticed some Sanders and Montana inserts in one 900 count box, and some Shaq and Jordan inserts in another...and lots of RCs in another of the 4 boxes....I'm not a Basketball collector, but I knew there was nothing wrong when a lot contains Jordan inserts, and the possibility of a few Kobe RCs..well, it just seemed like the right thing to do!

Then we finished with some basketball unopened boxes as well...before I hit the road to find more information of what I got!

The unopened boxes I picked for the roughly $90 include

89 Fleer BB
93-94 Skybox Premium x4 (I opened one up so far and pulled a few inserts including two Jordans w/ BV $25)
93 UD BB
94 Donruss BB x2
93 Pinnacle FB
94 Pinnacle BB
93 Ultra BB x2
91 UB FB x2
93 Leaf BB X5
92 Stadium Club FB x2

Somehow I came up with a slew of boxes that were opened and raped of good cards for the most part..but I think they were part of the $5 lot so that's ok..

Alright...I am going to take a little break to bust a box of the 93 Leaf then I will start posting some of the better singles I have found in that $5 lot.
