Collector Zone _ Introductions _ Story behind names

Posted by: bob_TCC Apr 11 2005, 08:33 PM

Looking over some of the member names that are being chosen, I thought it would be interesting if some of you with the not-so-obvious names shared the story or reason for your name.

Anyone willing to share the reasons?

When I was starting all over, I was trying to decide what to collect. I wanted it to be worth something. I went after a few high-end, slabbed 1970s Nolan Ryan cards just to wet my feet. I liked them, but it wasn't much of a challenge. If one had the money, they could purchase things at the snap of a finger. There was no challenge in that. Especially if items like that were offered everyday. One day I was stumped because I wanted to collect, but not haphazardly like before. Stumped, I browsing through eBay in search of ideas. I happen to be watching Raiders Of The Lost Ark and then a phrase from the movie hit me: "I hear you are.... an obtainer of rare antiquities." Hey! Why not build a collection like those I see at Sotheby's and Leland's? It doesn't have to be a big collection or mint. Just focused enough that it won't have any stray pieces. Hmmm.... But I need some sort of theme. I looked at other forums and I see that half the collectors are player collectors. Hmmm.... After researching card prices and players of the 19th century, I found out that I could afford a few of those cards within a few years' time. And they are truly rare and made scarce by collectors who like to hold on to these rare items. These 19th century issues are subject not just to collectors, but to people who buy classic cars, diamonds, and football teams. You can pretty much throw the book out on items of the famous players. With further research, I finally selected to collect the affordable issues of Mike "King" Kelly. On my webpage (under construction) I will write a few excerpts taken from "Slide, Kelly, Slide", the book written about him.

And with the name? I will collect any 19th century item that catches my eye, but I am after 4 specific items. I already have one (The Jovedos Golden Idol). Three more to go..... The Holy Grail, The Shankara Stone, and The Ark of The Covenant. smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif dry.gif

Very cool! Looking forward to hearing (and seeing) more about your collection or "quest".

And, yes, someone with "Indiana Jones" in the user name was one of the ones that caught my attention and prompted this thread. wink.gif

Sorry that my name is so predictable and boring. wink.gif

I use this name for almost anything, it all started when i satarted my yahoo email account. I am a big surfer and one of my favorite surf companies is Wave Riding Vehicles. So I adapted the initials WRV and the 01 is because someone already had WRV. So i use this name on all my messageboards and everyting else.

By the way i found this website to be the best with the message boards...keep up the good work and also the information on this website is great.

thanks

Cool reason for the name! Wouldn't have figured that one out.

Thanks for the positive feedback as well. We're really just getting started with the forums/blogs, so we should see more and more collectors joining us. We have plenty of other things planned for the site as well. It just comes down to finding the time. wink.gif

Thanx. I have three websites, but I am trying to decide which one looks best. I might just devote one website to 19th century/pre-1930 stuff and make the other post-1950. The third I will discard. I just received three Ogden Cigarettes jockey cards. I hope to post pictures some time this weekend. I also have my avatar original coming in. smile.gif

Well, I played baseball in a predominantly hispanic league here in Southern California for many years. My teammates nicknamed me "zurdo", which loosely means lefty since I'm left-handed. The name stuck and I've been known as Lefty ever since. Shan is a shorter version of my last name, Shannon. This is an interesting thread. It's always fun to see how others come up with their names.

this has made me think, why have I got the name Evolution? the simple answer is that I use it on every forum Im part of, hobby or not.I cant even remember where it started though...weird. its like my name on the internet now though.

Posted by: Butterman1 Apr 23 2005, 12:53 AM

Well...
I don't like butter on food, I don't like it plain.Frankly I don't add it to anything. I have no idea how I came up with this weird username.LOL

Nice thread!

My screen name isn't that unique....but a lot of people ask me about my e-mail address. k9six33@yahoo.com. As stated in my introduction I am a police officer and I am currently working on getting our agencies first ever narcotic detector dog (Lord knows we need one!!!!!). The six33 represents my badge number which is 633. In case anyone e-mails me that is the story behind the name.

It's called Golden City baseball league. We played at most of the high school fields in SoCal. I played in the AAA Division which was the highest level. I can't really compare it as far as the level of play. We had some guys that went on to the minors, but it was mainly recreational. The cool thing for me was that I got to meet my all-time favorite manager, Tommy Lasorda. His wife, Jo, came to speak at our opening day ceremonies one season. They live in Fullerton, which is very close to most of the fields we played at. I had the chance to speak with her briefly after the ceremony and told her how much I admire Tommy and that I've always been a diehard Dodger fan. She was very sweet and polite. She said she would pass the message along to Tommy for me. Needless to say, I was shocked when they showed up for my team's game the following weekend. He stayed for about 4 innings and chatted with the teams in the dugout. It was amazing.

Posted by: SportsMan29 Jun 10 2005, 04:46 PM

The name SportsMan29- I am a Sports Fanatic. I watch Sports All Day. The 29, I got that from Kevin Harvick. But I no longer watch NASCAR. Thats my SN on other sites, as well. I would like it to be SportsMan34, the 34 after David Ortiz. But SN is pretty catchy to fellow members on others sites.

Another couple of good stories. Anyone else?

-Bob

Posted by: DMacC Jul 1 2005, 03:16 PM

I chose mine as DMacC, because im not creative enough or have the patience of trying other names, all started back when i was making my first hotmail account, seemed like every name i chose some other guy/girl had already picked it. DMac was used too, so i tried DMacC, and what do you know it works. So, that's the nickname i use everywhere now, haven't had any problems for years.

I play ALOT of online video games. I was looking for a unique ID and, while playing one day after fragging (Socom II) a dude, someone said, "Sheesh, not again!". I thought it unique and it became my user ID.

And, no. It is NOT a drug reference smile.gif

Mine is not too creative. Like KHarmon, I too am a law enforcement officer (Deputy actually). When I first got a yahoo account, I tried "johnnylaw", but it was taken. So I made it johnnydlaw (johnny "the" law).

I'm also a video game nut, so I shortened the name to D-Law for my screen name and i've used it ever since.

I usually go with PooPHeaDFreD. I've been using that since '96 when I first got onto the internet. It progressed from poop to XPooPFaceX to finally, PooPHeaDFreD. I didn't use it on here because I use gglwebster when I want to be taken seriously, as with trading... (hopefully soon!) gglwebster is my name, Geoffrey George Luther Webster. No unique story behind that, it's just long.

Bob this is the best thread on any site, its cool to find out what some of this sn mean or how people came to have them! SWEET

Posted by: mrmopar Nov 5 2005, 07:31 PM

mrmopar...A name I sort of stole from someone on Beckett about 7-8 years ago. I have used in anywhere I could as an ID online, from ebay to chat boards ever since.

I dealt with the "original" mrmopar on beckett. I have always been a fan of Chrysler Muscle cars of the 60s and liked the name. He told me it was his fathers ID, who happened to be an editor for a major Mopar magazine at the time. Anyway, shortly thereafter I joined ebay and used it for the first time as my ebay ID. I stopped using beckett for a while and forgot about him.

I wandered back to beckett after a long absence. Discovering ebay in the late 90s would do that to you!! I decided to change my original beckett name and mrmopar was now available (I guess the original left or was booted???). I took it there as well. Now, like I said, I use it wherever it's still available online.

NOTE: Obviously "mrmopar" will not always be me online...there are several places it was no longer available!!

Posted by: dd316 Nov 18 2005, 10:21 AM

My story's really stupid, but since you asked... wink.gif

When I first got on the net back in 1996 or so (in high school) I used to frequent wrestling chatrooms, and I would always sign in as ddt, after the wrestling move of the same name. One time somebody else was already signed in as that, so I signed in as dd2. Then another time when somebody already was signed in as THAT one as well, I changed the number to 316, part of the angle used in the feud between Stone Cold and Jake the Snake at the time (the whole "Austin 3:16" thing), so I ended up being dd316, and that's what I've used ever since.

Posted by: Bondsaway Nov 18 2005, 10:27 AM

Hi,My name is coinman - really self explaing - don't ya think? yuk yuk,I am Steve from Surrey,BC,Canada.
I am always on the hunt for sport & non sport coins, I tried a few different names before but they were always taken. One day I went to a sports show and the sellers were all asking what can I help you with? or what kind of cards are you looking for? I replied no cards only coins.

After a few more shows they recognized me & would say no coins man only cards. So I thought I would use the name coinman to descibe what I collect.
Best of all it wasn't taken LOL.
Thanks for reading ,But as I have found out you will find the other name explanations more interesting.

Also since you can see my ebay name that's for former Viking Cris Carter. cris80 was taken so i had to put 3 S's in it.

Posted by: kadillac_style Jan 18 2006, 05:55 PM

kadillac style. When I was in High School I played football. I was 6'5 320 lbs. I played Defensive End and Offensive Tackle. Well my coach always told me I was as big as a Cadillac. Whenever we had a game we had to wear a dress shirt and dress pants. I always wore a nice pinstripe suit. So everyone naturally made a big joke out of the Cadillac....... with GQ style.

My last name is Kadwell. So I made it kadillac style. Its stuck I've been out of school 7 years and people still call me Cadillac.

Posted by: snowblink Jan 18 2006, 07:01 PM

Thought I had already shared...but guess not.

Since I'm from Colorado, snow seemed an obvious choice.
Picked up the "snow_____" theme when using various boards and trying to keep e-mail responses straight by having a slightly different name at each. Now I just use the PM systems, much much easier to keep track of trades and where they were done.

'Course, I've noticed other names starting with snow on some boards that aren't mine, so maybe should've just stuck with one name....oh well.

Guess I could use smilies and change it to "snow blink.gif "

Posted by: Bondsaway Jan 18 2006, 07:31 PM

As for 88, well 8 is my lucky number. And who wouldn't want double the luck? wink.gif

Posted by: Krusin Feb 9 2006, 06:30 PM

Mine's changed only a tad since I started posting on Hobby boards. I started out as TnKrusin because that's always been one of my favorite things to do cruise Tennessee. When I was younger and single a friend and I would hop in a car and try to get lost on the back roads all over the state. My friend had an Opel GT, we called it a midget Vett, on the back roads that thing would hold the roads like no other car till he got a Triumph TR6 British version with the wheel on the right, took some getting used to.

Anyway back to the subject at hand, I had to drop the Tn part of my name because too many people were getting it wrong. Since I've grown to really like Krusin as a NET name cause these days the NET is about all I cruise.

Sorry for the long read, I get carried away in nostalgia sometimes.

Posted by: jaxjaggywires Feb 9 2006, 06:36 PM

The main purpose of my name is to broadcast that I'm a Jaguars fan. It's a play on how Chris Berman used to say Jaguars on Primetime and Countdown, since he would say "Jaggywires".

Posted by: Bondsaway Feb 9 2006, 06:46 PM

Is chris berman getting paid for all this names?? hmmm I might want in on that!
Thanks guys very good reads. Come on people don't be shy lets hear your story!

Posted by: WhiteBuffalo32 Feb 13 2006, 11:39 PM

Well just joined the site today and Bob linked this in his PM
so I thought what the heck

The White Buffalo part came from 2 sources
when I was 1st out on my own ( 17 yrs old- 1970) and hitch-hiking / traveling the USA ,
I stayed for awhile with some native Americians and was told of a legend about how the birth of a white buffalo would coincide with major changes to the world

Later , that very same year Buffalo ( my home town ) finally got a "real" hockey team tongue.gif
and their logo was .............. you guessed it a .......... white buffalo rolleyes.gif

the 32 comes from one of my favorite sabres players Rob Ray
who played just about his entire career with our team.
His style was the same as mine back when I played
which was basicly .......... protect the talented guys
he gave 100% every night and always appreciated the fact he got the chance to play here
and that the kids / fans in Buffalo " always treated me with more respect than I deserved "
( the quote was his words not mine )

so about 5 years ago I changed from WhBfloCrds to WhiteBuffalo32

Posted by: SpireiteRachel Feb 14 2006, 02:30 PM

I put SpireiteRachel for everything as its easy for me to remeber. I wanted something with my name but with something else so added Spireite as Chesterfield FC are my favourite soccer/football team and their nickname is the Spireites. for those of you that don't know this is because the church in Chesterfield has a crooked spire. It's also where I was born biggrin.gif

I'm extremely bored so I'll play....

When 03-04 UD Exquisite Basketball came out I began investing heavily into it. During that time I took on the appropriate name of "Exquisite Buyer"...simply as a way to advertise that I was buying this particular product.

Like most investors I made my money and moved on. Not needing the name anymore, I took on the shortened version that many people began to refer to me as...."EB" and I added the 31 (my H.S, college uniform #).

Thus EB31 was born.

OK just saw this thread topic and noticed it was getting a lot of hits so I'll play along as well.

Right after my graduation I was at a party, go figure. A girl I didn't quite get along with well, decided she was gonna be ballsy and key my car not ever thinking I would know who it was (Had really dark tinted windows and a buddy was sitting in the car when she did it and she didn't see him). Well a few weeks later at yet another party, she shows up and is drunk and feeling 10 ft tall and bullet proof. We start arguing, of course everyone yells chic fight. She got one hit on me, with a ring and scratched my face, and I put her down. I went to work the next day with a bruise and a pretty decent scratch on my face, and everyone at work started calling me "Little Scrapper", well by the end of the day it was "Lil Scrapper" and then right after work they changed it again, after they stole my name tag, and it was Scrappy. I have had that nick name ever since. On other sites, you would be surprised how many people take the name Scrappy so I added "In Alaska" to it cause I have been here for 20+ yrs and this is home.

LOL @ Bob, I have mellowed out a lot. Injury to my shoulder will keep me from pounding anyones head in.

Military moved us to Alaska in '82 and my parents decided this was better than Texas, so they bought a house here and then dad stiffed us and retired here so the military wouldn't pay for our move back out of here. After that it kinda grew on me. Had a lil brother born up here in 85 so the family has just stayed here, immediate family at least. Besides they pay us to stay here so why not

Posted by: Taliasen Mar 12 2006, 12:37 AM

According to an obscure King Arthur legend, Taliasen was either Merlin's father, or one of Arthur's teachers under the headmaster Merlin. Taliasen is also the name of my renaissance faire and SCA personna. I am a wandering or traveling ranger who spreads a little chaos. So I am known, even in real life among some of my friends, as Tal or Tal the Traveler.
I am a huge wolf fan, hence the pic.
A few years ago I learned that Taliasen is the name of Frank Lloyd Wright's summer home. However nothing of the meaning of my name comes from that.

Posted by: SinatraKing Mar 15 2006, 11:55 PM

I don't think I have ever posted the origin on my name, SinatraKing, but I am sure that a lot of you may allready figure that I like Sinatra. First off let me explain that back in 98-00 I was a College Radio DJ in Southern Utah, and I also taught 30's 40's style Swing Dance. I had a Radio show, and my DJ name was actually Mr. Biggleswirth. I was such a fan of the Crooner era I hosted a specialty show on Thursday Nights dedicated to that Era. I set up a Hotmail account, and the first thing that popped in my head was Sinatra, and since I didn't want to add lover on the end making me sound to fruity, I added King. Now the nickname that most of my acquaintences call me, "Biggie", has another story behind it, maybe for another time.

I've tried to keep my name synonomous with every message board I frequent but alas, I haven't. It took me a while to find the name I wanted and now that I really have it stuck to me, I figured it would be a pain in the butt to ask a mod at every message board to change my name.

But anyways, onto the actual topic.

Kaygd Animal
I've always been this type of guy who just feels that people are naturally good and that usually gets me all walked on. I tend to be real nice towards people at first but as soon as I see them for who they really are, I tend to come out of the cage and let loose. I start to show my real colors and who I really am. I hate being walked all over and it's happened several times in the recent past.

For example, I was in the USAF and had this friend going through a divorce. I was living in the dorms at the time and he needed a place to stay. I had moved in with my girlfriend (my wife now) in her dorm so I let him stay in my room so he would not have to worry about finding a place to live for a few months only to lose money out on a lease. So while he's there, he uses my internet, cable, and my cell phone. He pays for the bills so I think nothing of it. The bills were less than $100. He ended up staying there for two months, moves out without telling me. I end up being charged with Fraud through the Government and get an Article 15. My "friend" tells the cops that I charged him $100 to stay in my room and even tells them he paid me for three months worth of "rent". So the USAF takes away one of my stripes and he receives nothing. He was higher ranking than me and while living in the dorm, he was still receiving his Base Allowance for Housing (non-taxable) which is illegal if he's living in the dorm. He just didn't want to lose the BAH so he never reported it. He still never received any kind of punishment for his actions. I was only a two-striper and still learning the ropes. He'd been in a while. I get my butt kicked by the USAF while he received nothing.

To this day, I don't let anyone just walk over me. I tell people how it is now and don't care what they think. Thus the reason for the name "Kaygd Animal". My true self was all caged up until past actions freed me from within.

Yeah, my name has a deeper meaning to me that in will for anyone else.

Besides, I also used to call my Druid character in Diablo II: LoD kaygdanimal and I just kind of loved the name since it fit him perfectly. By the way, I don't play that game anymore. It was during my nerdy loner days. Now I just play sports games with the occasional war game here and there.

In the 1970s, 3 friends went yearly to Quebec fishing. Way way northern Quebec where you had to canoe to an island to camp on... nearest town was 50 miles away. They were nicknamed Turk, Sam, and Herman (my dad).

Well, there wasn't much to do besides drink and fish... But one friend brought along a tape recorder and the held impromptu press conferences, radio talk shows, and interviews. Each friend played different parts (kinda like a really bad Monty Python).

The three friends decided to hold a mock interview with an indian chief, played by Sam. Sam (real name Errol) took the first two letters of the nick names to create a tribe name for the indian... SaHeTu (SAmHErmanTUrk). so he played the proud, drunk, Sahetu Warrior Chief.

Sahetu also became the name of a lure they made to catch walleyes in Canada with (a worm harness with beads and spinners), a business name for buy antiques, and the name of my website.

Sam was a very good friend of my dads, as well as mine... Almost like an uncle to me. He died a few years back in a tractor accident... Me using Sahetu on a lot of things I do is a tribute to him.

I use this name "Nene" on every board I post on. Some people online that I talk to call me Nene in IMs. I use it because I think it is a cool nickname for a player to have and I like how he choose to go by ONLY Nenê instead of using his full name most of the time.

Plus HILARIO, his last name, spells the first seven letters of HILARIOUS.

Hello all,

My name cajunfuji was a long time in perfecting. It started when I was a child. I had this friend of my dad's that I went fishing with. He would sit forever in the same place. I would get bored after a while of no luck and "go find some luck". He had served in Viet Nam and began calling me "fujimo". He explained that in the war the soldiers had that term which meant 'F*** you jack I'm moving on'. He said the way I just got up and went reminded him of that. The name actually stuck with me throughout high school. Some people didn't even realize that was not my real name. When asked about it I would say that it was a family name passed down for generations. I then joined the Navy (which as I said before I just retired from). There I was called 'Cajun' or coonass (a term for native Louisiana folk). As we would go partying the two just somehow combined and thue cajunfuji was born. Cajunfuji has become my alter ego. Cajunfuji is more daring and outgoing. Gary is more level headed and good-of-family oriented. The two balance nicely.

Anyway that's it in a nutshell,

Gary

Mine, I originally used for two reasons. First, I just wanted to come up with something to use on instant messenger that was funny to me and would make people who knew my real name wonder why I chose it. Secondly, it hid my identity to a degree. Most people always call me Luke, which if you look at my info, is clearly not true. But, when I choose not to display my first name it provides some anonymity. Anyhow, it's a Bible verse. It has gotten me in trouble with some female friends (and non-friends) in the past, but it's the one I've been going by for a long time, and I don't plan on changing it.

"For they did not believe the women, because their words were nonsense."

Luke 24:11

QUOTE(sahetu @ Mar 30 2006, 01:19 AM)

Me using Sahetu on a lot of things I do is a tribute to him.

http://www.sahetu.com has a listing of my growing site network. My dad's journal, my card collection, my recipe site, free photoshop brushes, and a forum for aspiring writers.

One Sunday (the only semi-free day) in boot camp while we were sitting shining our boots, we were all making fun of each other (in good fun). I said something to this guy Mason from TX, he got pretty mad and said "I'll kick your a** you Opey Cunningham lookin %$@*'er". The way he said it with that Texas drawl was just histerical and everyone was crackin' up. The Cunningham part went away but Opey has stuck with me for 14 years. Most of the people who know me call me Opey, I use Opeyjay online to personalize it a bit.

Thanks for the thread,

I'm a Tampa Bay Lightning Fan and collector.
The Lightning team nickname I use is "Bolts".
I am also a mechanic, by trade. Sooo, Bolted_Down seemed to fit.
I also use the initials B_D, along with other derivatives like "Blatant_Defect" in video games.

Posted by: Lupush Aug 19 2006, 08:25 PM

Mine is a pretty interesting one. When I was in college I wore silver hoop earrings. A friend of mine who is Croatian used to call them "loops" instead of hoops. "Loops" then evolved to "Lupush" which means "Wolf" in Croatian. This came about while we were driving to the city and "Hungry like the wolf" by Tears for Fears came on the radio. My friend Juri then started laughing hysterically.. and the whole night all I heard was.. "Hungry like the Lupush". So my name was born.

Posted by: acampione Aug 19 2006, 09:24 PM

very interesting. I thought it was along those lines because of the french word for wolf..

Posted by: StatMansSportsCards Aug 26 2006, 01:59 PM

I got the nickname "Stat Man" from a few friends in college because I always told them these funny sports statistics that no one would be interested in except me (Stuff like how UNC's basketball team lost every game one season that they played on a Sunday, and how the Patriots almost never lose when they have more rushes than passes- like once in the past five or ten yrs; Also, the Vikings have lost the last 32 games that they've scored under 20 points!).

They always wanted me to try and find out new stats to pass on to them. So I called my online site "Stat Man's Sports Cards" because of the nickname. My site's slogan is "where the sun sets on high card prices" (because the template for my site is an orange sunset).

It's an old school nickname & when i used to play arcade games if I got a high score I would put in fle(only room for 3 letters back then). It's not actually pronounced as it looks. It's pronounced flay not flea(as in RHCP bassist). See an akward irishman.

My nickname has been Riko since that ###### Ricosuave song came out in the late 80s. I played a few online RPGs and I needed something at least a little medieval sounding, so I stuck a stan at the end.
I have been Rikostan for the last 8 years or so.

all righty then...im not making this post to profess the meaning behind my screename because there isnt a story behind it, i just thought of it right before i joined as i often do with my fantasy sports teams when i make them. and ofcourse this being a sports site i had to relate it to a sports theme that relates to me...im a guy and i like the astros.

ok the reason i made the post is because i am calling out a member of this site...i want to hear what diaperdandys story is...he hasnt posted here yet has he? i wonder if he never noticed this thread. i think he hasnt posted yet..ive gone through all 10 pages and havent seen one from him. and you know i wouldnt have probably gone through with this if i didnt notice the name rikostan as the last post...because thats another screen name i would have wanted to know about...so diaperdandy..we are awaitin'...

My name is a name I try to use on all sites as a username. "Doomsayer" is the name of a song by a metal band named Hatebreed. I just thought it would be unique to make it into terms of 1337(leet : replacing letters with numbers that could be translated as letters). I use it for fantasy football, fantasy basketball, counterstrike, xbox games, cisco log in, TCC(duh! tongue.gif ) and about anything else that I have to use a username for.

Good idea for a thread. This is the first time I've noticed it!
1968 A's is my handle because that's the first year they played in Oakland. I'm very proud to have every 1968 A's card! My CAP repesents that year and that year only. In 1969 the caps were exactly the same except they added an apostrophe and an "S" to it. Then in 1970 they introduced yellow in the caps. The 70 and 71 batting helmets were ALL yellow except for the tiny bill of green. I'll see if I can bring a picture up.

My father's nickname is Michigan, and my nickname is Little Michigan. Both my father and I were born in Detroit, Michigan. However, his career in the Marine Corps led us to Millington, TN. When he retired from the Corps he was hired by MATA as a bus driver. It was at MATA that the other bus drivers nicknamed him Michigan. One day I went to work with him when and I picked up the nickname Little Michigan. I figured that since all of my favorite teams are from Michigan it would be perfect.

Hazel nuts represent eternity in a lot of different symbolic systems.
Willow trees represent suffering, desire, pain, etc. in most (think Weeping Willow)

Hazillow = Eternal Suffering!

It's my way of making fun of emo/goth kids.

I think it's really funny, but only a few people get the joke.

Even less find it funny when they do get it.

No one thinks it's clever.

My username comes from the name of my card shop. Well, that is what it will be called if I ever open it up. Was supposed to open one up several years ago with my father, but he passed away and it just hasn't come through yet. Someday!!! I even have my sign layout all figured out and how I want to have astroturf on the floor with marker lines painted on it. Gotta keep dreamin....

I've used about 5-10 different names on forums, but this one stuck. MC are my initials, and everyone thought the username knuckleballerMC just seemed really original. My screenname on AIM is nuckingfuts3691, because a few years ago I created it after watching the movie Dickie Roberts, and 3/6/91 is my b-day. I've used other names at sites such as YankFan306, knuckleballer306, Light Grenades (name of latest Incubus cd), StoryOfTheYear (decent band and liked their name), and theres some others too. But this is the only one to stick.

Mine is kind of long...let's see..it was what...17 years ago I started playing fantasy football. My last name is Jack so I thought their hometown should be JACKsonville, Alabama. Decided a good story of overcoming odds was Jack and the Beanstalk so the team became the Jacksonville Beanstalks playing in the House that Jack Built. Now fast forward to when I joined AOL after getting on the net and I needed a screenname. Beanstalk could be dual meaning for the team and talking about the Beans as they (and I) have become affectionately known...but some farmer dude already had it...so had to go to Beanschat....see, told you..long story.

Posted by: bushidobard Feb 25 2007, 03:11 PM

My first experience with online message boards came from a now defunct game called Virtual Producer. It was designed to mimic getting a movie made in Hollywood.

At the time, I was a literary manager in L.A. so the game caught my eye, but I was stunned at the amount of misinformation and blatant backstabbing from those not even in the industry (it never surprised me, mind you, from those already *in* the film industry).

I began lurking the boards then posting, without revealing my job, as "bushidobard" -- "bushido" for the code of chivalry (and thus honor and truth) of the samurai warrior and "bard" for the art and the writers. I took it upon myself to correct misinformation and to take a positive approach whenever possible. I'd love to say I was always successful...

Since then, I've left the industry and now I teach. Since I still see so much of the same nastiness and still work with writing (since I teach English and Film) I've kept the name though it has absolutely no bearing on sports or roto or baseball cards.

I *have* used it in various fantasy leagues if that counts....

Thanks for asking!

Wow, my name originated about 7 years ago, when I first started my e-mail account with Yahoo... I was into rap music at the time , and there was this group out of Oakland called 3 Times Crazy ... I liked the way this guy named Agerman rapped , and he came up with this saying Snuffaluffa... So I wanted to be original with my e-mail , and came up with Baralufficus... My First Name is Barrett which prompted the name ..

Very Cool thread BTW ..

I created my name almost 10 years ago when I needed an alternative to my AOL email. When I first got online, I picked up the nickname Tate because I am from Idaho. The 31 and NYM is homage to Piazza, who was a Met at the time. Last year was really awkward, when he was neither 31 or a Met...but I guess in a way, he always will be 31nym.

I used to specialize in Vintage graded cards when the grading boom caught fire and I cashed in all my childhood memories that luckily I had kept in mint condition. I began collecting in 1966 and did so until 1977 so I really liked the grading idea until the inventory was gone.

Posted by: hull Apr 15 2007, 06:29 PM

I’ve used the name hull (or hull1 if it is taken) since the early 90’s. It’s a tribute to the greatest sports figure I ever met, Bobby Hull.

When I was a kid my grandfather would take me to hockey games at the old Chicago Stadium. We would get there early and me and the other kids would wait outside gate 3 ½ for the players to arrive. Bobby Hull would always stop to talk to us. He would sign autographs, tell us some old hockey stories, he even once took the time to show us how to shoot a slap shot. I remember on several occasions the other players would have to come back out and drag him into the building to get ready for the game.

I met him again about 15 years ago at a card show. He hasn’t changed. His line was the slowest moving of all the signers at the show. He answered every question, shook every hand, and posed for every picture anyone wanted.

I use the name hull to remind me why I started collecting cards. A #1/1 insert card might have good investment potential, but show me an old Gale Sayers card and I can not only tell you about the 6 touchdowns he scored in a single game in 1965, but how he almost made it 7 touchdowns, if it hadn’t been for the 49’ers punter making a shoestring tackle.

The investment in cards can be good, but the memories are better.

I'd like to say mine was simple because my first name is Ross and I am a man...when the wifey lets me be one. biggrin.gif Thank you, I'll be here all week.

Actually, when I came home from serving a church mission...(1996), I went out with some of my sisters friends dancing, clubbing, something to that extent. Anyways....on 91X, a popular radio station, was a DJ named Rossman and he was pretty popular apparently. (I went to Seattle on my mission for 2 years and had no knowledge of this Rossman) Long story short, I'm a guy nobody has actually seen for 2 years, I was working for a catering company almost 16 hrs a day because I was money driven...but they swore I was the DJ and I wouldn't admit it. So they'd always call me Rossman from afar or behind my back, trying to "catch" me. Pretty goofy I know, but they swore I was the popular radio guy. Anywho....

Well, although my name does seem obvious, its not what you might think at first. My last name is actually pretty close to hooters and in high school once I started working out and getting pecs the name just really stuck and I thought it was cool. Of course that name is taken anywhere you apply. So I added my b-day.

Mine's pretty original XD

I've had this username since like 2003, at the height of Curse-breaking fever (the first time, after the Boone home run and all). My favorite players on the Red Sox used to be Kevin Millar and Trot Nixon, so here goes the proccess

I thought to my self, Trot to Millar sounds rather like Skip To My Lou. I thought it had a nice ring too it. Then, as a joke, I made it Millah to add a Boston accent of sorts. So here I am now, trot2millah

Posted by: animal56 Jun 16 2007, 11:21 PM

My screen name "animal" came from a couple of different instances.
1. I play hockey fairly aggressively, and it became a running joke in the dressing room one season, in reference to the Doug Gilmour (milk?)commercial. "How does he do it?" "Kinda like animal." So it stuck.
2. The other you can ask some of my past gfs and my wife. ;-)

The number 56 started when the create-a-player option first appeared in the EA NHL series games was introduced. I wanted a unique number for my CAP, and 56 has stuck ever since.

Nothing special, but it's fun, and I ran with it.

Mine is simple. My name is Kirk, and I like Star Trek, and the 42 is the ultimate answer to the question of life, the universe and everything (Thank you Mr. Douglas Adams, rest in peace)

If I may indulge I have two other internet names I use (or have used) my standard email name is very very simple klandersen (my first and middle initials and my last name). When I first started using the internet one of the names I used, besides the standard of my three initials and birthdate or year, was EWOK42. Again the 42 is from Adam's Hitchhikers Guide books, and the EWOK story goes like this..... When I was in college I majored in broadcasting and worked at the school's radio station as a DJ, on my first 'on air' shift I played "Ewok Celebration" by Meco and did a voice intro for it. For the intro I impersonated Yoda and said "Yoda says it's time for the Ewoks", well the other folks from the station thought I was refering to myself and started calling me Ewok. At first I was annoyed by the nickname "Ewok", but quickly adopted it as my on-air nickname.

My name came from time in university. I was always good with computers so got into often helping friends with homework and projects. I was often in the computer lab and someone would be complaining about something not working on the computer. I'd offer to help and often shifted the screen so I could see as well.

When they tried to show me the problem, everything would be working fine. So it came to be that I had this weird magical power of making the computers work. And TechnoWizard was born.

Personally I think the computers just liked me.
