Collector Zone _ Contests and Giveaways _ The Chain

Posted by: msw_sportscards Feb 1 2011, 06:26 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcawnRIyeok- link provided by RGBII

I am starting a collector's chain of brotherly love. By doing so, I am creating a package that contains 1 Vintage Card, 1 RC, 1 GU, 1 AU, and 1 Insert card. I will send this package to the 1st person who requests to be on the list. When that person receives, they may, then, take one card and replace it with another one. Then they send it to the next person on the list, and so on and so forth.

Rules
1. Request to be added to the list. By doing so, you agree to add a card from the same category from which you took a card. i.e. GU for GU, AU for AU, etc.

2. You must add at least one card to the package but may add more.

3. You must post in this thread when you receive and let everyone know what you are taking and what you are adding.

4. You must agree to send with DC. This way we can keep track of the package.

5. You must have at least 10 completed transactions to join the chain.

6. You may not join the chain if your user id is red. If you join in good standing and at a later date your user id is set to red, you will be removed from the chain. Depending on the violation, you may be banned from the chain permanently.

7. Once you receive the package, you have 7 days to ship the package to the next person on the list.

8. I know we won't have a problem with this but by joining you agree to let me and anyone else in the chain publicly humiliate you if you break this chain. In other words, if you make off with the stuff, you will be outed on this site and every other site.

9. When the package makes it back to me, I will take 2 cards, replace them and add another card from each category. At this time, the second round will begin and each person will take 2 cards and add 2 cards, and so on and so forth for each subsequent round.

DANG, nice package! I wonder what Johnny is going to take, and what he is going to replace it with......... unsure.gif

Posted by: msw_sportscards Feb 1 2011, 08:17 PM

Brandon,

I intend this to be self-regulating. I would hope that each member of the chain will keep the spirit in which this was created. With that said, I realize some of the younger collectors or people who aren't able to get cards of this caliber will be able to obtain something and give within their means. I would hope that everyone will take what they want and add what they can. That is in part why I will be recharging this every time the package makes its way back to me. In addition, I will use random.org to rearrange the order every round after the first in order to give everyone a fair chance at the recharge.

Dontcha just hate it when you know you have something and can't find it? I can't find the Sandberg RC but I think I may have a suitable replacement. Stay tuned for details (and scans).

Posted by: captkirk42 Feb 2 2011, 12:13 PM

Marc,
An interesting idea Please Add me.

This reminds me a little of the old (and now lost I think) Lucky TCC Nickel from a few years back. A different concept though since that wasn't a chain just a "pass it on at some time".

Johnny,

When you receive, please let us know in this thread which card you're taking and what you are adding. If you can scan the card here, that would be awesome. Then when you send, please post the DC. Enjoy!

Marc

Posted by: msw_sportscards Feb 4 2011, 06:54 PM

Kirk,

I had the TCC lucky nickel in mind when I thought of this. I have been very blessed with the generosity of others since returning to this site, first, with the Secret Santa and then with Shawn and Richard's contest thread, I thought it would be cool if I could grab a card or two from the GU care package that's on its way to me and then share the rest with others. The combination of all these things led to this thread. I hope it works out well and everyone enjoys it. I've tried to add cards that I hope new collectors and seasoned veterans alike can appreciate. And I hope others will keep the spirit of this thread alive. I think we have a great group of guys so far.

Marc

Ok, I have made my decision on what I am taking out of the mix. I have decided to take the Howie Fox Vintage card, also as discussed with msw, I am taking the Damion RC and replacing it with something more along the lines of the Gwynn RC. No offense to your submission J5. So here is what I am adding, and I will add scan later:

1981-82 Topps Bill Laimbeer RC for the RC replacement
1962 Topps Lou Groza for the Vintage replacement

Then I am also adding one card to the choices, which means if you take it you must replace it with something similiar, in this case it will need to be a dual auto.

My addition is:
2007 SP Chirography Signs of the Superbowl dual Auto Joe Theismann/Drew Pearson /10

We've hit 15. I think that's a good number. What do you guys think about closing this one? If we have more people who are interested, I am willing to start a second chain. Just some thoughts.

That sounds good.

Posted by: WestCoastSkinsFan Feb 16 2011, 10:59 PM

Honestly? I'd just stick with one chain.

If anything, you can create a database of folks who want on the list, after a certain point. When a transaction is made, just random.org the list and one person adds on or something along those lines.

If you stick with just the one thread, it'll be easier to take care of and will eventually become one big epic thread.

Posted by: msw_sportscards Feb 16 2011, 11:20 PM

Some good points. Initially I had wondered how cool it would be to have every member in good standing on the chain. Then the realization hit me that at some point it might take years for us to get through the entire chain. I think for now we'll keep this open. I'm intrigued to see how long this chain can get. Thank you everyone for the input.

I would think that the average exchange would take around one week. So 15 weeks isn't that long. I say keep it going!

I am down either way.

This could really turn into something very special.. I already have a couple fo idea for cards to put into the mix... there are a couple of vintage I am debating, maybe something with a shield on it...who knows. when it gets around we will see how the mood strikes me laugh.gif

Posted by: WestCoastSkinsFan Feb 22 2011, 08:47 PM

You know, the funny thing about this is that I may not really have a suitable dual auto to replace that with. I might have to pull a switcheroo!

As soon as I receive, I'll be updating things. A picture of the new card will definitely be included.

Well, I had a little bit of a quandary on this one. I don't actually have a ton of dual autos. So I had to do a little thinking, but I think I ended up with a good solution.

The Pearson/Theismann is no more. It has been replaced with...

user posted image

05 Contenders Jason Campbell/Carlos Rogers dual auto #/50

Frankly, that alone isn't a fair trade. Which is why it's not alone!

I present to you, another dual auto, and the newest category in the chain: memorabilia.

A dual signed ball! This ball features autos from Ernie "Schoolboy" Johnson and Bill "Baby" Bell, from the KC Monarchs of the Negro Leagues. I hope it finds a good home! I've been holding onto this one for a few years now.

PM coming to Icrackwax.

Wowzers!!!!!!!!!! Dual signed Negro League Baseball. That's amazing! Glad to see the Theisman in good hands. Nice additions! Please send to Icrackwax by Wednesday 3/2 and post the DC. This just keeps getting better and better!!!!!

And yeah, that was the only thing I was kind of worried about (the shipping). I think it was about $3, so it wasn't THAT bad, but if things keep growing or the memorabilia piece gets larger... hrm. We'll have to see!

The ball was actually a contest win from the "Snake" thread about 2 years back. I can't remember who ran that one, but the ball had been donated as a prize and they were simply told it was an autograph from a Negro League player with an inscription.

When I got it, I just thought it was so cool, and I wanted to know more. So I started doing some research. That's when I stumbled upon some archived info, and saw that it wasn't just one player but two. I imagine this was signed at a charity event or something along those lines.

Posted by: Icrackwax Feb 25 2011, 12:36 AM

Marc,

Could you please put a list of the contents of the current package in the original post? I think it would be easier for everyone to see what is being sent out and keep track that way.

Dan,

Great Idea!!!! Thanks.

Posted by: msw_sportscards Feb 25 2011, 07:06 PM

As requested, I have added the contents of the package to the original post. In addition, I have noted what people have received and anything that was donated.
Let's keep this thing goin!!!!!

The package is currently in Limbo Land! I hope the USPS updates tomorrow.

Posted by: WestCoastSkinsFan Feb 28 2011, 12:01 AM

I printed off the mailer and all that at home. Some times those take a little while longer. It was dropped in the mail Thursday morning, so I imagine it won't be much longer before it's delivered.

Posted by: Icrackwax Feb 28 2011, 09:31 PM

Here we go. It took we a good amount of time to decide which of these fine items I wanted and what I had to make a fair replacement with. I will be taking the Negro League Autographed Baseball. This will be going in my growing collection of autographed baseballs and will probably never leave. In replacement I have a Colby Rasmus Autographed baseball. The autograph is a bit faded because it was signed in sharpie around three years ago.

I feel that this alone would be an unfair trade...so I had to add yet another category. Please welcome the newest member of the chain....

[drum roll]

...the patch. I thought I had a much better patch card, but this one I believe will do. It is a Jake Peavy/Ben Sheets dual 3-color patch /99.

In addition, I will be a adding a small gift for the next member in line. I see that there is not much that meets his collecting needs so I wanted to include at least a little something. This doesn't have to be a "thing" but if the next people in line want to continue this gesture, then it might be a neat way to help people's collections while still continuing the chain.

I will get pictures in a few minutes and post them. Thanks again for giving me this opportunity and I hope everyone else enjoys the chain.

I full heartedly agree with Richard! This is the best thread I have seen on TCC in a very long time (if not ever!) The concept alone is the true spirit of what TCC is all about!

As much as I would love to jump into this fray, I will sit out for the time being due to my current location! However, if Marc would be so kind as to shoot me his address, I will send some items to be given away at random!

Also, I noticed back earlier in the thread that there was some discussion about how to keep up with the rounds. I have an idea! biggrin.gif

Once a round is done, post the entire rounds results as a regular post at the end of the thread. Put a link, such as Round 1 , that takes you to that post and keep the most recent round on the first page. This will keep eveyone current as well as keep historical information avaiable! biggrin.gif

I can see as the chain gets bigger and bigger and into later rounds the already tough decisions will be made a little tougher. I hope my replacements can be worthy of what is already going around.

hey bro can i join the chain? if i can can you PM me when its my turn and stuff so i know ill be getting the package? and how do we get the adress of the other participants will you give it to us?

Posted by: captkirk42 Mar 21 2011, 10:39 PM

The Chain is Here in MD (Silver Spring) it arrived today Monday 21 March. Fortunately the package/box was small enough to fit in my Apt. sized Mailbox, I had visions of it being bigger and having to be held ransom overnight at the Post Office until I bailed it out with the "You've Got Mail" card they like to leave in my mailbox when stuff doesn't fit.

Oh Man this will take a little while to decide. I'm mostly sure what I will take and what I will replace it with. Just need to weigh my decision some more, and admire all the contents while I'm the caretaker of the Templar I mean TCC Treasure.

I think I will also add some more fun to the box. More on that later I'll try to make a scan of what I will be adding and post that sometime tomorrow night.

No I am just fascinated with their history and their connection to the Freemasons. Plus last week I rewatched the "National Treasure" movies I had rented from Netflix. Well the first one I rewatched the second one was my first viewing of it.

I am drawing a blank on the name but history channel has a fairly well done special on the Knights Templar... It was very good... Some streches for TV but overall well done.

Posted by: captkirk42 Mar 24 2011, 12:52 AM

Hi guys!

OK if you like it or not the decision has been made. clapping.gif
I'll mention some of the things that tempted me.

First off let me say it isn't easy. As the chain was clinking & clanking it's way across the country I had my eyes on a couple of potential grabs. If I was into Letterman's I probably would have snatched up the Shairon Martis (Nationals my team Yeah) but I'm tired of GUs and patches and was never a huge fan of the Lettermen's (Sorry those who are really into those).

I'm really really into vintage so the Lou Groza was screaming really loudly to me. Almost drowning out all other bids for my attention. I'm sure I could have found a suitable replacement in the vintage category to replace that one, but I wouldn't know where to begin or if I should use Football or Baseball for it.

The Will Clark '08 Threads insert was also sort of tempting since I have some of the base from that set, but I've never really had the desire to complete the set of that. Also I'm not sure which serial numbered inserts I've got that I could part with easily.

The ball? The ball is tempting but what memorabilia do I have that would equal it? I only have 2 baseballs and neither is a suitable replacement for an auto'd ball. One is a 1980s George Brett edition ball that I use to toss around in my 1980s nylon glove (I know I really should look for a vintage real leather one like I had when I was a kid.) The other ball I have I will not part with until I am well into my golden years it's one of those Charles O. Finley Orange Baseballs. Plus we should be careful about the size of memorabilia pieces we put in this package we don't want to raise the cost of shipping it around too much.

But I digress. Here is what I picked:

2005 Playoff Contenders RN-2 Jason Campbell and Carlos Rogers Dual Auto.
user posted image

I am replacing it with:

2006-07 BAP Dual Signatures Patrice Bergeron and Phil Kessler Auto- Bruins (Adds Hockey to the mix)
user posted image

To add some fun to the pot I add another Link to the Chain

I've added a Non-Sport Base category.

1986 Topps Garbage Pail Kids - 125b Woody Alan (Original from the 4th Series)
user posted image

The Chain gang box moves on. I will try getting it too the post office in the morning (Thursday later today since I'm posting well after midnight Wednesday)

Posted by: msw_sportscards Mar 24 2011, 08:05 AM

The original 80s Garbage Pail Kids ROCK!! Mom threw all mine out. Great choice with the Campbell/ Rogers dual and nice add with the Hockey dual!!!!! Another category has been added to The Chain!!!!! Something for the non-sport lovers or GPK enthusiasts.

Posted by: msw_sportscards Mar 27 2011, 12:48 PM

As soon as I can determine a way to track the package internationally, that may be a possibility. However, since one of the requirements is ship with DC, it makes it difficult.....unless UPS or FedEx offers international tracking. I don't have much experience with using either of these services. US bases abroad are the exception, of course, since they utilize the same postal system.

I did receive the package yesterday, and will have my selection made and the package shipped tomorrow. I just need to get an address to send to.

I cracked up laughing when I opened the package. I was going through the cards and saw the Garbage Pail Kids card. I wasn't old enough when those were the thing, so I had never actually seen one in person. Neat card though.

I don't know what I'm taking yet, but I do know that I will be adding some nice stuff. How about a nice GU bat card from a 2-sport star and a 1/1 + rookie auto of one of the best WRs in the league...Find out exactly what they are tomorrow...

I have to decided to take the Colby Rasmus Ball, and replaced it with an Official Ball from the 1996 World Series signed by Andruw Jones. And to spice things up a bit, I threw a Bo Jackson 2005 Donruss Champions GU Bat, a Roddy White 2008 Stadium Club Photographer's Proof 1/1 and a 2005 Finest X-fractor Auto /199 into the box.

had to scan the ball because my camera has no batteries, sorry if it looks wierd. Maybe the next person can take a better pic of it.

I also put in a few extra cards just for wvball. I wasn't sure what he likes, but I checked his list and found a few RC that he will hopefully enjoy.

In order to keep it fair for the people who have already received and considering the freebies that are being added by our generous members, I think we should keep it at one card until the next round. In addition, the majority of the categories which have been added have been due to either a member perceiving that what they had to give wasn't enough so they added more or a member exhibiting the tremendous generosity that is characteristic of the TCC community. There are a lot more contests coming for the readers of this thread so stay tuned.

As for re-categorizing the contents in the package, I am always open to suggestions. In addition, this is our thread not my thread so if anyone has suggestions, please feel free to contribute.

Thank you for your input, Joe. I certainly appreciate it. I want to see this become the best thread on the web. I think we can do it with everyone's help!

Looks like wvball has made a suggestion for updating the categories. Do we want to stick with this format? I have to admit I don't know much outside of baseball...and a little in the way of basketball....so I might need some help keeping these updated if we go with this format, but scans should make it much easier. Also, instead of other, I'd like to make it non-sports and have base, insert, AU, GU, and vintage. I wish I had done this originally.

Very nice adds Joe....I love the way all the members are helping this thread evolve!!! It's a great thing to watch. Was the 08 Threads Will Clark still in the package?

Tell y'all this . . .

When my turn comes around, I intend to add a
permanent shipping box, something that can be used
again and again.

The reasoning for that permanent container is this . . .

I will add full sets to this fine Chain.

Whoever is #21 on the list, be prepared for a trip
to the Post Office. This one ain't gonna fit in your

Soooooo.......I received a package from the very generous sasports yesterday which contained a plethora of nice freebies to give away.

Thanks Sarge!!!!!!

In an attempt to revive TCC Chat night on Thursdays, I'd like to incorporate this thread and the chatroom to hold contests for the wonderful prizes that Shawn donated.

I began this with the 65 Tony Kubek that I pulled from my collection. Only one person showed....RGBII. Once again, Richard has asked that I pass along this prize to another deserving member and I will be doing so.......but who is it going to be???? Keep an eye on your mailboxes....cause this will remain a mystery until the lucky winner posts.

Until then.....keep an eye on the TCC chatroom on Thursday nites....you never know when the ph34r.gif will sneak in there and leave something for the awesome TCC community!

While the Lou Groza Vintage card was extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemley tempting. I had to go with the Harvin Auto....

So I figured, I'll trade a Gator for a Gator, and included a numbered 2010 Topps Platinum Aaron Hernandez refractor Auotgraph.

I don't have a price guide so I also added a Dwayne Wade Topps Stadium Club Jersey Card and an Iron Man 2 Don Cheadle memorabilia Card....not pictured is a Topps Chrome 2010 Gridiron Lineage Tony Dorsett/LeSean McCoy card.

$10.95 really isn't that "grand" maybe I'm in the minority hear but if I have to ship sets that (hopefully fit in a medium flat rate box) I don't know...seems silly.

If this becomes a large flat rate box ($14.95), I might get out.

Posted by: WestCoastSkinsFan Apr 4 2011, 11:03 PM

Well, there's always the other way around things. If you don't want to ship it, take it!

Posted by: wvball Apr 5 2011, 08:48 AM

kinda forces your hand though and we are supposed to replace it with same type item so. I can see others point that it does get pricey

Posted by: WestCoastSkinsFan Apr 5 2011, 10:36 AM

Guys, this thread is all about generosity. I wouldn't get too caught up in the price of shipping, or what MAY be, if it's at all possible. We don't even know what "set" means, btw. Is it a full insert set or something like a set Panini gave away for the Nationals?

Let's not jump to any conclusions or panic here. And frankly, if it really comes down to it, I'll help you off-set the price of shipping to keep things moving.

Yes, I hate to be "that guy" and the idea and purpose to this whole thread and idea is great and a testament to the TCC community. I just know that high postage can become a hassle for some and perhaps to this idea.

If I'm the odd man out on this, no big because I DO NOT want the be the one to take away from what this is all about.

Perhaps a 2nd chain can be started (if this is a big problem) that could be limited to items that would fit in nothing larger than a Small Flat Rate Box (that would whole quite a few cards itself).

Posted by: bajmurray Apr 5 2011, 12:48 PM

I say we just leave the thread like it is.

I think everyone expected that the number of items would grow, just based on the nature of the thread.

As far as I'm concerned, the only downside is that with the number of items to pick from, how do you only choose 1???

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This thread IS about generosity and keeping the love and pasison for cardboard (and memorabillia) alive! Lets not deaden the spirit of this thread by bickering about Shipping fees and what not.

If you have somthing produtive to add to the thread, by all means add it! But if you have somthing even remotley negative, do us all the favor and stick to PM's! wink.gif Not to take away from your concerns, but some things are best left between you and the creator of this thread and should not be blasted publicly to start a debate.

'Nuff Said.

Posted by: msw_sportscards Apr 5 2011, 05:34 PM

Yes, please feel free to PM me and I will attempt to address any concerns. I will say this. I spoke to Richard before he made the anouncement that he would be adding full sets to the chain. I can say that from what he and I discussed, it shouldn't have too much of an impact on the cost of shipping. Out of respect for Richard and wanting him to have the same chance as everyone else to surprise and excite us with what he adds when the time comes, this is all I can say about the nature of the sets he intends to include. Please rest assured that he and I both know that cost of shipping is a factor and I plan to have further discussion with him as his turn draws nearer.

As Shawn said, this thread is about the generosity of the TCC community. We have already shown what the great TCC community is capable of. You won't find another thread like this on any other site. Let's bring the excitement back!

No need to get wired about sets and shipping costs,
these are an addition to the chain. They are not
expected to be replaced if taken by the next in line.

As Marc has stated, this is all being taken care of via
correspondence between he and I. Try it sometimes,

I will get the package out tomorrow....had some medical issues to take care of (ALL GOOD!!) yesterday and today....DC# post coming

Posted by: Gforce083 Apr 6 2011, 05:09 PM

Those who speak up always get chastised.... there is nothing wrong with debate and discussions in public.

If I had a personal problem with someone in the chain, now that would be PM material but my concernes dealt with the entire group.

Issues arise, people have questions and concerns, it's life, it happens and not everything "negative" belongs behind closed doors.

I wasn't questioning or putting down the idea, community or generosity behind this thing whatsoever! I asked to be part of it because it's a very cool and novel idea that has become something grand!

I was simply looking at the fact that I signed up for something I thought would have minimal effects on the mine and others wallets down the line. Someone here might be unemployed or in school and may not have the $11-$15 for medium to large flat rate box. I simply voiced a concern.

Now, that this issue has been beat to a pulp, I would also like to get back to what this is all about!

Posted by: DawgPounder Apr 6 2011, 06:04 PM

I made it to the post office today after all!

In addition to the normal selection, you may also select the card from the "Stupidest idea for a premium insert card" category. However, if you do that, you MUST replace it with an even STUPIDER idea!
