Had an idea and was wondering if it was allowed.

Say I wanted to raflle off a card ex: 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle

100 raffle spaces, $100 per ticket.

Winner would be chosen by random.org

Would this be allowed on this site ?

No. Thanks for asking, but the CZT feels that this is not something we would allow.

The point of the matter is, that it isn't going to be allowed. So it really doesn't matter.

It was just an example but someone who always seems to have an issue with me wanted to make himself look foolish stating a Mantle ungraded rookie isnt worth 10 grand.

Anyone who wouldnt buy a nice condition Mantle rookie for 10 g needs to stick modern cards as vintage is not their forte.

Anyways moot point since its not allowed, dont agree with it but it is what it is.

Agree completely!

A hypothetical situation that grows to
another topic all together.

I must admit some guilt here, as I
posted the "honey."

The sad fact is, I knew it would be
responded to.

A '52 Mantle could excuse all bad
manners and bring up some new
forms.

Alas, we do have to conform to
Interstate Gaming Laws that prevent
lotteries, raffles and games of chance.

I cant believe you and I actually agree on something.

Actually my question was responded to in full and the second poster decided to make it into something that it is totally not about.
I dont think you added any "honey" at all.

Didnt think about interstate gaming laws again dont agree with it since gambling is not illegal in the US but it is what it is.

Let me ask if this is ok.

To make it more realistic, 100 lots with the winner getting a $200 bv Jeter auto.

Each lot is $1 and every lot will include 1 game used card.

There is no gambling or risk and someone walks away with a nice prize.

All this being hypothetical of course.

Would that be allowed in these forums?

Contests are different and legally are
appointed a different reverence.

If you can pull that one off, I applaud

People do "contests" like that all the time, where everyone is a winner with a cheaper game used, but there is one huge prize... usually on youtube. Nothing really wrong with it, as long as a transaction takes place and everyone gets something.

Well I was looking to do it on these forums so I wanted to check first.

And while I know you werent insinuating anything, I have been in this hobby for 25 years and have never ripped anyone off nor do I intend to.
I have great feedback here as well as on Ebay.

Just was thinking of ways to move some cards/memorabilia, make some money and give some nice cards/memorabilia back to the members here.

Still applies, I am concerned about the
"make some money" response.

We're gonna have some problems with that.

Nothing personal mind you, it just a matter
of law.

Well I cant give the items away.
It is not a raffle, it is not a contest.
Game used cards are worth more then $1 or $2
Anything I put in the lots would be worth more then the price of a lot.

If I paid $50 for a $200 Jeter autograph do you mean to tell me I could only do 50 lots for $1 each ?

Not to mention how would anyone know what I pay for something.
Cleaning out inventory is making money and dont see why that is against the law.

While there are honest people out there, some of the reasoning behind why certain activities are allowed or disallowed is to protect the members as best we can. We expect that everyone will use "good" judgment in whatever ventures they get into, but we also know there are those out there willing to take advantage at the slightest opening, and for that reason some things are not allowed like raffles or "gifts" via paypal. In the "gifts" issue, the problem is it offers no protection to members, so the moment we allow one 'trusted" member to use that function it opens it up to all members, good or bad. With raffles you might run a completely honest one, but another member comes on and runs one and steals hundreds of $, so to avoid the issue completely we do not allow them. The other issue is the gambling laws as noted, and since TCC contains minors, we would be in violation for that reason alone.

As for selling grab bags I think it has been done before, but I will have to check on that one. Though I think most who have attempted to hold them have not had much success because even though the price is cheap most people expect the worst from buying these things and therefore think there are better ways to spend their money.

Well while not fool proof these forums are set up to proect its members and has done a good job from what I have seen.

It is been my experience in life that you can never please everyone and no matter what you do someone will always be unhappy but if done properly it could be a success.

Who wouldnt want a chance to own a nice card or piece of memorabilia for a good price ?

One piece I was considering doing was a Mantle/DiMaggio auto signed with their rookie years but I do need clarification if it can be done before I even think of how I will do it.

I'm just saying I haven't seen any proof yet. High BV $30k, alright well I didn't ask about that. I asked to show me proof of any sales.

Anyways, I guess I'm just the worst member on TCC because I question things.
