All those Barry Bonds cards in your collection just got more interesting with his hinting today that he may miss the entire season.

If he never returns to baseball and, therefore, never passes Ruth or Aaron in HRs, what happens to the long-term value of his cards? Should you unload them now?

I am sure that his cards will hold their value just because of his name being used in the media so much. Even if he never breaks the records he will still be well known.

I hope that he never comes back. I do not want him to break those records!

First, welcome!

I tend to agree that his cards will hold reasonable value no matter what, especially since it appears the steroids scandal will not prevent him from getting into the Hall of Fame.

Breaking the records would certainly cause a short-term spike in the value of his cards though.

I say hold them. Then again, I've never been a seller. Even when I was scamming the little kids down the street..."Sure, I'll give you five whole dollars for that box of 800 cards from the 70s." laugh.gif

I would say hold them... All this talk about him not coming back has not changed the price on his 1991 TOPPS Desert Shield Baseball cards. They are still selling strong and at a high price.

A PSA 10 1991 TOPPS Barry Bonds #401 Desert Shield Card sold for $810.00 the other night. If this would have been his other card #570... It would have sold close to $2000.00, not bad for a 1991 Card.

His PSA 9 has sold for up to $350.00!

BUTTTTT... If you want to sell your 91 TOPPS DS cards please email me!!! I will take them off your hands anytime.

Sammy, a good friend and one of the best sellers of these cards won this item. We are both trying to complete a PSA set. He has completed over 50%.

PSA 10 SOLD for $810.00 on ebay!

I think they would hold value UNLESS we find out he has been taking sports enahncing products (steroids). Then I think the market for his card will fall just like Mark McGwires card.

So everyone is saying to hold on to them, but the poll is tied at 50/50. unsure.gif

Anyone saying to get rid of them? If so, is it because you think the cards will lose value or because you just wonder why anyone would collect Bonds cards? laugh.gif

That's really a hard call. There would be only three different circumstances when I would sell his card:

1. He comes back to play baseball AND SF makes the playoffs while he is in the starting lineup - sell no later than after the first playoff game

2. He is acquitted of any and all charges of steroid use - sell in the mid-season if he is one of the top 3 for HRs

3. He no longer plays, his record stands, and 5 years from now - sell starting two weeks before he is inducted into the Hall Of Fame

Otherwise, either hold onto them because you are a collector, or just cut your losses and sell immediately.

What about the scenario where he comes back and is getting close to breaking Aaron's record? Out of all of them, his cards might be hottest then.

Although, that scenario looks more questionable than before.

Yeah ... I think there are only two scenarios .. but we won't know until he either tries to come back or announces he won't.

1) he cleans up, gets healthy, and Breaks Aarons' record

.. then his card values will not take a dive and steadly climb over time as memories of his monster blasts and great stats become more prevalent than memories of suspected drug use

2) he can't cope with the strict performance drug rules .. can't get into shape without them, and never returns to form and break the record.

his cards will take a dive ... he will be third in the record book all time and his single season will have an "*" next to it - and only the most dedicated will want to collect his stuff.

That's why I have scenario #2. If he's one of the Top 3 by mid-season, sell before something bad happens. The prices will tend to rise due to the demand of collector anticipation. A modest profit is better than none. Keep it in the price range of most collectors and it will be easier to sell.

I'm sure that I will ruffle some feathers with this....but I put Bonds cards in the give-away packs that I hand out. I won't deny him being one of the all time greatest bats in the games....my problem with him is that he's a complete horses butt to the media and the fans who come to watch him. My nephew came home from Afghanistan back in 03 just in time for spring training. He saw Bonds at a spring game that he had went to and he got numerous autographs and words of thanks from the players that he approached seeking an autograph. When he asked Bonds he was told that "there's autograph sessions before the games and at practice" and Bonds walked off without so much as a glance towards my nephew. My nephew and the other guys in his unit that were there (by invitation from the Giants) were stunned to get that kind of treatment from someone that they would have paid good money to go see. I respect his baseball abilities....but his personality needs to be whacked as hard as one of the balls he puts in the bay.

Actually, you may not get much of an argument about this. Living near Pittsburgh for my entire life, I've heard more than my fair share of similar stories.
