Collector Zone _ Show and Tell _ Sketch Cards

Posted by: captkirk42 Jan 29 2012, 05:39 PM

For sometime I've been into and interested in sketch cards. I just don't see spending upwards of $100 or more. Usually they start around $40 or $50 bucks. My max limit on any card is generally $30.

I think I will try to keep this thread up for when I get new sketch cards.

Now in my book there are two types of sketch cards. There are the real true sketch cards where an artist puts pencil and/or pen and ink to cardboard and a mini-masterpiece is born. You can be almost 100% sure that those are true 1/1s. Even drawing the same "drawing" it is very unlikely that two drawings will be "exactly" the same. These cards will probably not have anything on the back.

Then there is the Manufactured sketch card that is part of a card set from one of the big card companies. Those usually have some sort of pre-designed border on the front that limits the artist a little as far as using the edges of the "canvas" is concerned. These could quite possibly be photocopies of a sketch transferred to a card, and the back might have some identification stuff on the back. I don't think a big greedy card company now-a-days would let something slip by without some kind of identifying mark or copyright info. But I might be wrong.

So my first two entries on this are a couple of cards I got from Ebay directly from the Artist http://users.nehp.net/mspears/Marks%20Pics/index.html. Both are pencil sketches with no markings on the backs. Shipping costs were just $2.00 and the envelope was a bubble mailer.

The first card was only 99¢ the subject Catwoman.

The second card was a bit more (but still well within my cheapskate budget) at $4.99. The subject Black Cat (from The Amazing Spider-Man comics).

I love how Spidey is peaking his head in from the doorway.

I have a Batgirl Sketch card coming soon. Completely different artist. It costs a bit more but has greater detail and looks to be in pen and inks.

Nice -

I understand where you're coming from. Although, as with any card, they're worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Here are a few I own....

this is a true 1/1 but part of a 2 card sketch. Ink is definitely going to boost the value, and it might have appeal to a variety of buyers.

Now this one is also a true 1/1, from a more well known artist ( Brian Kong) who has done an entire insert set for Allen & Ginter, and compared to many of the other sketch cards from the Topps set, I would have no problem commanding over a $100 for this.

So it seems that like everything else, beauty (and value) is in the eye of the beholder.

I got two more sketch cards about a week ago (Wed/Thur 01/02 Feb)from Ebay. Spent a little more on them. Since I have to add the scans to my bucket before being able to add them here it takes me longer to show stuff here (It would be easier if I could upload from my 'puter directly here or maybe I need to start using my blog's album links.)

Here is a cool sketch of Batgirl on her Batcycle by Lyle Pollard. Got it for $14.99 Free shipping.

Next is a serial numbered card from an artist who I can't tell what their name is. A seller on Ebay has several of his sketches (I don't think it 's the seller because he also has other artist's stuff.) Any way this "upcoming designer of non-sport trading cards" does serial numbered print runs of 250. This one is #224/250. Got it for $12.99 w/ $1.95 shipping.

I mentioned these a while back (back in Feb) on my blog "http://captkirk42.blogspot.com/2012/02/mistress-of-horror-sketch-set.html" I go into a little detail about them and I had found some of the original photos that they are based on.

There are 5 "cards" total I'll just show a couple of them (you can see the rest on my blog post linked above)

Been awhile since I've added some stuff here. I still have one or two Non-Sport cards to scan and post sometime (had them for several months now) but here are a couple of sketch cards I got on Saturday 27 April 2013 from Ebay w/FREE SHIPPING from the same seller who I think is the artist he only does 1/1s and I think he mostly does watercolors. The first one was at the top of my price range for just about any card, I might have stretched it a little for this one and most definitely would have stretched it for the second one.

Anyway for $34.99 (My top price for any modern card)

This other card I saw first and just HAD TO HAVE. This one was priced a little better at $24.99 I would prefer to have had it at least $5 cheaper but who is to complain with 1/1s?

It has been a while since I've added cards to this thread. It has also been a while since I've gotten or scanned some sketch cards. I have about 3 or 4 more sketch cards somewhere I have not scanned (shame on me) but here is one I got from the Bay back in November. I http://captkirk42.blogspot.com/2014/02/warehouse-13-myka-sketch-card.html if you want the details:
