In one of the most-anticipated announcements in recent Heisman history, Griffin beat out the likely No. 1 pick in next year’s NFL draft (Andrew Luck), the nation’s top running back (Trent Richardson), the nation’s leading scorer (Montee Ball) and the Honey Badger (Tyrann Mathieu).

"Everybody associated with Baylor has a reason to celebrate tonight," Griffin said.

Griffin finished with 1,687 points in the Heisman voting, including 405 first-place votes. Luck finished second with 1,407 points, Richardson was third with 978 points, Ball finished fourth with 348 points and Mathieu finished fifth with 327 points.

Luck finished in second place for the second consecutive season.

"This is unbelievably believable," Griffin said. "It's unbelievable because in the moment we're all amazed when great things happen. But it's believable because great things don't happen without hard work.
Looking at what Griffin achieved this season, the result shouldn’t be a surprise.
The junior quarterback led Baylor to a 9-3 record and amassed eye-popping stats along the way.

He threw for 3,998 yards, 36 TD passes and just six interceptions He was dangerous on the ground, too, running for 644 yards and nine more scores. He threw for more than 300 yards nine times, including more than 400 yards four times.

Griffin gave the nation a look at things to come in the opening game of the season when he led the Bears to a 50-48 win against TCU. He completed 21-of-27 passes for 359 yards, five TDs and no picks.

But his Heisman-defining moment came Nov. 19 against Oklahoma.

After the Sooners tied the game 38-38 with 51 seconds left, Griffin marched the Bears 80 yards in five plays, hitting Terrance Williams from 34 yards out with 8 seconds left for a 45-38 victory—Baylor’s first against Oklahoma.

Griffin threw for a school-record 479 yards (breaking his own mark) and four touchdown tosses.

Griffin’s teammate said it best after the win. “Robert Griffin’s the best in the game,” Baylor running back Terrance Ganaway said. “When the ball’s in his hands, expect big things.”

Looking at the list, and knowing who played when.. there's a lot of awful players that beat out great HOF'ers for the Heisman in college..

Oh, and it's funny how it used to be RB's who won, and now it's QB's.. funny how the games evolved, and it's reflected in the heisman winners smile.gif

He certainly deserved it.

The Heismann winners are littered with unfulfilled pro careers, I say there are tooo many differences between the rules and the field and the mindset of coaches.. and when you think about competition there certainly is a huge difference.

Consider this how many players are drafted from each college team 1-2 on avergae.. (sure I know there has been 7-8 from one team but what is the average from all division 1 schools?

That really boils down the number of good competitors when it comes to those who want to compare college careers to pro careers.

It just dont stack up.

That is why the heismann award winner is not a sure bet ever to have a nice pro career.

Well deserved for a great COLLEGE player in RGIII. I remember when Baylor was a joke in everything except baseball and track. Now they are pretty well rounded in almost all sports. Kudos for their first Heisman trophy winner!

Curious what type of pro player he will be, the Vick type that can play at the NFL level or gimmick QB that turns into a WR
