My oldest brother was the football collector in the family.....he collected from 67 to 75 and from 78 to sometime in the early 80's.....he was a huge Dolphins fan in the early 70's and somehow turned into a 49'ers fan and is a 49'ers fan to this day. I remember looking at his cards with him back in the day....I guess I was 8 or 9 before he actually let me touch them but only then with a threat to break my arm if I messed them up.

Close! 1973 Topps. This year was interesting, none of the stores in the small town I grew up in sold football cards that year. So these are from a game I have that was introduced in the summer of '74 called Pro Draft. Pro Draft has 4 players all competing for draft choices by position. It came with a big orange football spinner that gave you your options on what to do. Very heavy duty and well made game. One of my all time favorites. Any one else have this game?

RE: Pro Draft game from '74 That is what it was called! I remember seeing the game in the stores and wanting it, but alas never getting it. I had forgotten the name of it. Thanks!

BTW I'm so glad I found this "Vintage" section. I don't have much of the newer stuff from the last 10 years or so. I'm feeling old with the definition of "Vintage" being older than the 80s. Oh well a 25 year old car is considered a classic, so I guess 25 year old cards can be called vintage.

Good memories! I remember trying to get all those little football posters in the '71 set I believe. Only like 1 per every 5 packs or something. But later on I put them on my bulletin board for a backing and put tons of thumb tack holes through em, ruined just about all of em!

Yeah you're right Kirk and forgot to tell you very good guess because only the ALL PRO players got the all black frame that year. A completely different looking card than the regular '74's

You guessed right. USC's Mike Garrett 1965 Heisman Winner. Known mainly as a KC Chief in the pros. The other USC Heisman back of that era is still making the headlines

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes 1971 insert set of Topps regular series. One in every wax pack accompanied a mini poster which on the back side was a football field where you played this game on. i.e. 4 yard gain, 2 yd. loss, TD etc. 53 cards in the set and 32 different posters.
Many of the posters I remember throwing away because I wrote on them like you were kinda supposed to do to keep track of your yardage playing the game. I liked the idea but the game was a bit boring. I'd take out the Mattel Talking Football or the Electric Football game out instead of wasting time with that stuff. LOL. Also I much rather Topps would have stuck with their 1970 style of posters which were real collectors items! About twice the size of the '71's the 24 poster set was printed on a thicker stock of paper AND were not photographs! They were all hand painted works of art. Yes, Wow! Still got a couple of those!

Ive always been a fan of "old-school" football.

Seem like every year the players get more like spoiled hollywood primadonnas.. just out for themselves and drawing attention to themselves any way they can. Seems like every tackle is followed by a stupid dance by the guy who made it.. no matter if the play lost yards or gained 99 yards. That and they are getting closer and closer to fitting the QB with a dress each season.

I feel the same way about my Bears players.. If Greg Olsen did some Chad Johnson pre-planned dance after every score, I would hate it just as much.. but I would still be happy he scored!

Just another reason my favorite player is, and always will be, Walter Payton. Class on and off the field. Have you even seen a highlight clip of him trying to draw attention to himself after a 5 yard run, or even a touchdown? I do remember quite a few times when he flipped the ball to a offensive lineman after a TD to let them spike it so they could feel that joy though.

Nope.. they just dont make them like they used to, do they?

1964 Philadelphia
card #98

Game was Nov 3 1963
Rams 13 Minn 21
What this card is all about is that the first two years of the Philadelphia Gum Co. Football Cards had each (almost) football team had a play card with the teams head coach on it. Very unique. They picked one of their top plays with a name (you try to get that info today) and named an important game in that season they used it in. And yes every card I found, that team won the game LOL.

That was 1967 Philadelphia Gum Co. Bruce Gossett. This was the last year Philadelphia Gum made football cards. 4 years total from 1964 through 1967. All great looking cards which I favor much over the Topps of the same era. All had excellent stats on back and some with scratch offs ! They were NFL only as they did not have a AFL contract, so no present day AFC teams were included.
Bruce Gossett was the best kicker in the NFC at the time, well actually the NFL itself since it was pre '70! But only two kickers had more reliable toes than Bruce Gossett during his playing span and they were both AFL'ers. Jan Stenerud and George Blanda. Bruce played with the Rams about 6 years and then another 3 1/2 with the 49ers. He won a lot a games for Roman Gabriel and John Brodie with his magic toe!
