I bought from there when they had their Black Friday weekend sale. Free shipping if you purchased more than 10 cards plus there were discounts on a number of cards. I managed to complete some of my sets that I only need a few cards and was having difficulty trading for. Picked up some other cards for sets that were at an excellent price.

What I liked about the site is that they show you a picture of the actual card. There is also price comparison so you can choose which seller to purchase from. There was also good communication - they e-mailed me when my card package was mailed.
I thought that the base cards were overpriced. I think that they start at 25 cents. I think that almost my entire order was insert cards because of this. Some of the inserts were also overpriced but I bought the cards just to complete the sets.

Assuming that they have the same sale next Black Friday, I'll use it again. But this time I'll do some research beforehand so I'll be better prepared.

I'm hoping that someone can help me out with a few BV's on some cards from the '93 & '94 Ted Williams Card Co. I'm trying to work out a trade with someone that involves some of the inserts and I'm stuck figuring out what they are worth.

Thanks in advance for your assistance - Jeff

His reputation has caught up to him. Back in the 80's he was able to take advantage of people who had vintage cards and didn't know their true value. He came calling with his stack of cash and hustler/Big Dealer persona and was able to convince people to sell to him.

Now, people can do research on the internet and know what they have. Also, there are only so make attic treasures. When the card market exploded in the late 80's/early 90's everyone went searching through boxes in their attics. Finally, sportscards are more well know now than when he was making his large purchases back in the 80's. People were just happy to get some cash for the 'junk' they had in the attic or basement.

Within the sportscard collecting community, he has a reputation as a hustler and self promoter. I don't believe anyone wants to deal with him. Also, someone could get more for their cards selling them on Ebay or the collecting websites than being lowballed by him.

I think that everything has caught up to him, and he has to look internally for blame rather than external.

I'll echo some of the comments made on here. I found that Tuff Stuff had too much fluff (i.e. advertisments), and not enough substance (i.e. pricing). I hadn't bought one in a few years, but the last one I bought I was disappointed. It appeared to me that there was very little effort on keeping pricing up to date, and the lack of relevant articles. It had gone downhill significantly from what I remembered in the 80's and 90's.

On the plus side, it was good to have one monthly magazine that had pricing over a number of sports.

One of the amazing things about Johnson achieving 300 wins is that he won more games in his 40's than he did in his 20's.

This contradicts the thinking that there will never again be another 300 game winner. The 'experts' look at the current pitchers in their 20's and early 30's and if they don't have about 150 wins they figure there is no way they will reach 300 wins. It will depend upon the health of the pitcher, and if the pitcher has the perseverence to continue pitching into their 40's. Johnson didn't have any major health issues during his career and still has the desire to pitch. Look at Jamie Moyer - he's probably another pitcher that has more wins in his 40's than his 20's.

So bottom line I believe that Randy Johnson will not be the last 300 game winner. I could foresee someone like Roy Halladay reaching 300 wins if he wants to continue pitching into his 40's.

The Stanley Cup finals have come and gone. Better luck next year Red Wings - I expect them to be in the Cup finals again next year.

Want list updated for recent trades and acquistions. I've also updated for additional set wants. I'm also looking for an inexpensive unopened box of 93/94 Fleer Power Play series 2.

Thanks for looking!!!!

Please let me know if there are any Topps Traded sets. In particular the '83 Traded set, and how much you would be looking for it.
Thanks

I expect him to be a solid NHL player. Superstar in the Gretzky/Lemieux class, my gut feel is no.

He broke Peter Lee's career OHL scoring record. Peter Lee was a solid NHLer but no superstar. Just because you are a star in junior does not always translate into being a star in the NHL. One of the prime examples is Alexander Daigle. He was the consensus #1 pick in his draft year. As for being an NHL player he had a couple of average years but nothing to justify him being the #1 pick. Also his rookie year everyone wanted his card. But now you can probably pick it up for peanuts

It's been a while since I posted my hockey sets wants. With the Stanley Cup Conference Finals going on right now and before the current hockey season comes to an end I thought it would be a good time to see if I can get closer to completing some of my sets. Below are my current set wants.

Let me know what your wants are. I have hockey from the mid-80s through late 90's (not much beyond 1999) mostly from OPC and UD (with some from various other manufacturers). I'll also have traders from the sets I'm working on. I also have baseball from the early 80's thru 2009.

Thanks for looking,
Jeff

Bip,

First, welcome to TCC. Sounds like you have great seats. Can't wait until the season starts.

However, realistically, I'm not expecting too much this year. Too many unknowns with the starting staff, which was their strength last year. Also, 3 very good teams in the division should make things difficult to contend.

If the hitting is a continuation of last year - Yikes!! I'm hoping Vernon, Alex and Lyle get back to the level that is expected of them. And a healthy Scott Rolen would help a lot.

Good article.

Another example of a non-collector who put their cards away from the late 80's/early 90's being surprised when they find out their cards are not worth much.

I agree with his points that there are way too many sets being done every year, and the card manufacturers have to find ways to bring kids back into the hobby. Also, yea the kids have to have fun with their cards, not to look at them as investments.

Wow, a simple thanks but no thanks would have been sufficient with a comment that the bid was too low.

All the rest of that garbage was unnecessary!!! I'd be interested to see what it eventually sells for. I agree with Kmart, it's not the hobby it's certain people.

QUOTE(Icrackwax @ Feb 17 2009, 05:46 PM)
It books $1.50 according to my beckett. The red backs are 1.2x the regular version. So $1.25 X 1.2 is $1.50.

Thanks very much for the response. I thought around $1.50, so it was good to receive that confirmation.

Thanks again,
Jeff
