QUOTE(mjda @ Jan 18 2013, 11:37 PM)
There really is no single person, or specific group of people, who can be blamed for the decline of activity. It's really just a combination of a lot of things.
*

This is correct, but what gets annoying is that lots of people and posts in this topic seem to put all of the blame on the CZT here as the reason for the decline, which as we all know is nowhere near the reality of the situation. That being said it is time to move on from Bob and make this site fun and the "community" it once was.

Wow talk about some old faces returning. Honestly, my belief falls in the line of Ilovetheheat when it comes to why alot of the members left. But it wasnt the CZT as a whole, it was two (and occasionally a third) that I felt overreacted to completely miniscule issues and were very inconsistent when dealing with members. For example at one point I was called an "emo child" told to "Get out of the sandbox" and that same member posted on the message boards while I was suspended that I was harrassing him (baseless claims). That member wasn't disciplined for his remarks but I was suspended for responding to them. And when he made the baseless claims of harrasment, the member was neither disciplined nor was the post edited by the CZT. It just seemed like complete favoritism. I mean, I can admit that my suspensions were probably somewhat warranted. I mean, my first suspension was 30 days (reduced to 14) which still seemed rather high considering I had never been warned prior to that and the typical procedure at TCC was the infamous 72 hour suspension. I wasn't the only one that happened to but they ALL happened to members who were under the age of 18. When you start breaking standard operating procedure and single out the teenagers, what do they do, they rebel, and thats what happened. Most of them left, some stayed on, but the ones that stayed on were clearly not bringing the same attitude that they had previously bought. And clearly, its the under 18 crowd that is making the hobby grow. We all found other sites like FCB that catered more to our wishes at that time (the discussions were dramatically less filtered) and thats what happened. This isn't a critique, this is just stating what happened and I'm sure theres plenty of members who were younger, maybe not even under 18, but were younger members of the site who can back me up on this. And for the record, this started brewing while Bob was still around.

Alex, I think the filtering was and will always be here, that was Bob's design at being "family friendly" and making TCC an atmosphere where an 8 year-old can come and go without learning new words, etc. I thought most posts were pretty clean, however, there were people who pushed those boundaries. Additionally, people started including images where decisions had to be made on what is exactly "family friendly". It is a tough line to follow as what is acceptable to one, may not be to someone else. I agree some CZT got drawn into battles, but I also think there were times where they pushed to the limit. Either way all of that is in the past and off topic. None of that fixes TCC or helps chopinalex find Bob.

Where is Bob? When I was active from 07-09 or so he owned this site and was actively on. I dont see him anywhere. Did he sell this site to someone? Is he ok? Is he selling girl scout cookies? Can someone tell me where he is? I like his posts and insight on the hobby. Just curious.

He witnessed the mafia smuggling counterfeit baseball cards, testified against them, and is currently in the witness protection program.

What a messy thread. I was on the CZT when Bob took off. I wasn't a big topic-starter or anything, but I spent a lot of time in the transactions and did some policing of some problem members (behind the scenes) - in fact I still have 19% of my posts in completed transactions - I'm sure almost all of them were status requests.

I just want to point out that when Bob left - the backlog of accounts pending approval was beyond out of control. I think I took up assistance in that task for about two weeks. It is beyond explanation to describe how overwhelming and out of control that process is. 500+ pages of member names - 99% of which are spam or bots. I believe that by far the biggest reason for the decline of TCC was the almost complete inability to approve accounts - I believe even multiple months went by before anyone even knew how to do it. With no new blood coming in, there was nothing to keep the community growing.

Putting personal feelings aside, the CZT had some members that weren't as active, but there was a lot of work and a lot of questions we didn't have answers to. We tried, and eventually my real life got in the way too. I left after a few months of my own inactivity. But to fully blame the CZT at that time I think is 100% wrong. There were a lot of members racking their brains trying to figure out how to 'fix' the site.

kmart

I came back, i handle the new registrations

I deleted close to 13K of bot registrations that existed when i first waltzed into it.

I now check them 3 times daily and vow to never let it get out of hand.

That being said, we still have few to little new actual members and many I do approve never post!

Man...how things change. Hopefully many of you remember me, I recognize many of you who have posted in this particular thread. I came to TCC back in April of 2005, before a lot of you other regulars did. That was before the site really took off and exploded which was a great time period. I was in college at the time and just getting back into collecting cards and had never done any trading or buying/selling until I came to TCC. I love the hobby and sports so much and still collect today despite having life happen. I'm a store manager at Dick's Sporting Goods which takes up 55-60 hours a week of my time. Back when I was in my prime here at TCC I was only a part timer with Dick's and had much more free time to come to this site to post and trade. Times do change though, for all of us. It's a sad thing in a way, because I have a lot of great memories from TCC and it brings back good memories just seeing some of these usernames again. I'm rarely on TCC these days, and didn't even really know what all had been going on here until I read this thread. I spend more of my time on SCF or Blowout now than I do here, primarily because they are more active and it is easier to make trades on there. However I feel like TCC will always be home for me in a way, since this is where I got started over 9 years ago. Time really does fly. I'd like to say thanks to all of you who I have posted and made transactions with over my tenure here. I'm not saying goodbye though, since I still do pop in from time to time. And who knows...maybe eventually TCC will return to the glory days. Only time will tell...

Ryan

Hi Ryan...times do change.

Yesterday, I was looking through my old PMs (2900+) and saw all the wonderful and nice people that I used to chat about sportscards with (including you). It is really sad to see so many people have moved on.

Blowout is too much of a zoo and Beckett is really quite.

Times do change people except I still collect Mark Brunell smile.gif

Might have been on today, as a member called "tccteam" came on today, but not really sure, but it did say East Liverpool, OH. for his location, same as Bobs.

Maybe he will come back, or give someone the power to make changes to the Homepage, that would be great! cool.gif

Concerning the homepage and site code modifications... Mike(MJDA) and myself have extensive experience with a variety of web languages, as well as forum CMS maintenance. I've been working as a web designer for a variety of media firms since 2008. I remember many moons ago Bob and I even had a conversation about a possible TCC auction site/sub domain.

Any questions concerning web design/programming just PM me or Mike and I'm sure we'll do our best to help!
