As some of you know, I graduate on December 18 with a degree in accounting.

So far, I have not been a very active job-hunter. Apart from attending a Meet the Firms event with local accounting firms, I have not done anything (been focused on school and taking breaks in between schoolwork/Wal-Mart laugh.gif ).

Today I received an e-mail from a firm located in Nashville. They had a representative at the Meet the Firms event, and asked in the e-mail if I was still available for employment. The will begin interviews shortly for a Staff Accountant position.

I did a little research and it would likely be associated with a hospital in Nashville, TN. This is exciting; however, I am scared about the possible drive. I live in Russellville, KY (around 100ish miles to the northwest); despite having my license for around 4 years, I am a very inexperienced driver. Currently, I could never picture myself driving in Nashville traffic!

I am hesitant to respond - but at the same time I do not want to miss a great opportunity!

Relax Cody, this is the first of many challenges
that you'll face.

I am more than confident that you'll excel at
this job (if you decide to take it). The driving
is secondary to the first rung on your professional
ladder climb.

I wish you the best.

When an opportunity presents itself (especially in this job market), take it. It's not too often that an employer willingly goes out and requests an interview without having received a job application. A 100-mile commute should be the least of your worries. wink.gif

Start polishing your shoes and preparing your resume!

respond!

Traffic is nothing that you cannot get used to. In fact if you move close to the facility then traffic is non-existent.

Cody there comes a time to do what you and your mom have prepared yourself for.

Scary heck ya! dont let anyone tell you different.

Plus you got some great people in nashville like Bud (Krusin) who I am sure can assist in helping you get around.

Dont pass up the chance especially in this economy. You go for it, get it and get to work! Life is tooo short to not cut the ties that bind!

Yea I would go for it! Think of the drive as your peace time! Just throw on a CD or the radio and relax. I got my DL when I was about 19, and I started driving a taxi when I was 20! laugh.gif I was driving about 150-300 miles a night! The driving was the easy part needless to say. I did it for about 3 and 1/2 years. Just don't think about it to much (well do think about it, but you get what I mean). After a week or 2 going there and coming home it will be no sweat. Good luck! cool.gif

Congrats on all the hard work first off! Getting a degree is the biggest thing I'm looking forward to right now.

I saw go get an interview and show them what you can do. They can probably assist you in moving expenses, so that commute wouldn't be so bad. Maybe it's on the outskirts of the city so it won't be that bad either wink.gif. After a little while, though, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Best of luck to you. Maybe one day you can work for a big accounting firm in New York, talk about traffic laugh.gif

Nashville traffic isn't really that bad. I was down there Friday around rush hour, with a concert, parade, and 5K race going on and was able to get around just fine.

Nashville traffic is not bad when compaired to some other cities of local size. Truckers rate the interstate routes in the area as some of the best. The only problem your likely to encounter would be during RUSH hours, morning & evening. That problem is gonna be backup's & more backup's, according to which of the main routes your taking into town & what time you'll be on them. The back up's are a daily occurance inbound in the morning & is worse when school is in session. Every now & then you have a perfect day when there's no backup & you can zoom to where ever your heading but they are rare.

St. Thomas hospital & Babtist hospitals are now joined both main campuses are close to each other. Both have locations away from town & in other small cities in the area. I'm not sure if the satallite locals would be where you might be stationed but be aware you may not have to come into town if that were the case. Stay open about it until you know for sure what the offer is, the Health care field is BIG here & work experience at St. Thomas could & would help you later securing a job closer to where you select to call home.

My advice is to drive into town after 10:00 a.m. one day to time what a normal trip would take without the traffic. Then take the same trip during rush hour & time your route again. FYI monday morns seem to be the worse inbound & Fri. afternoons are the worse outbound.

Feel free to PM me any question you might have about the area & I'll assist in any way I can.

Good Luck on the job!!

Cody,

I studied and guaduated with Honors in Accounting, was a VP in our school's Beta Alpha PSi chapter, did everything I was supposed to and then join the IRS...hated it and left the profession! Ended up in retail management. You never know what might happen.

Good luck!
