this set made in 1972 needs an upgrade or at least a review

they had

Pitching staff
Walter Johnson RH
Lefty Grove LH
Cy Young

Catcher Mickey Cochrane
1B Lou gehrig
2b rogers Hornsby
SS Honus Wagner
3B Pie Traynor
RF Ruth
CF Speaker
LF Cobb

Backups
George Sisler
Eddie Collins

Now no disrespect for all of the old timers on this list, I just think there may be a few replacements here

Id love to see your choices

Pitchers

for a left hander Ill replace grove with

Randy johnson
with Sandy Koufax as a close second

Id leave Big Train on the staff but in the day and age of specialty pitchers

Id take the sandman over Cy Young
at least Id have a closer

Nolan ryan and potentially Clayton Kershaw were also considered "finalists"

Catchers

Sorry Mickey you may have named a future candidate in Mantle but there have been at least 3 backstoppers that were overlooked even back in 1972

Yogi berra
Roy Campanella
Johnny Bench

Campy had a shortened career
Berra won all those championships 10 of them

but johnny bench had 2 championships and in my opinion is the greatest all time

I see no harm in Lou Gehrig remaining #1

or rogers Hornsby
and Ill even retain Eddie Collins as my choice of backup

Shortstop

Im sure Wagner was a beast
his war is off the charts but

Ill take Derek Jeter
4 world championships more and hrs than wagner and a true leader by example

Wagner played in the deadball era. not his fault.. Jeter played in a fish bowl for the yankees that is an intangible no one can take away

OF
Right Field
you will get no argument from me on ruth

He was the greatest ball player of all time in my book and made baseball what it is today thru all of its faults and reincarnations.

hr not only couldve been a HOF pitcher but he did things at the plate after that!

Sadly that covers up my second favortie player henry Aaron who i will name oneof m backups

Center field
I know the argument about the 72 set naming Cobb the greatest LF when he was really a CF but.. It doesnt matter
Speaker nor Cobb Match the say hey kid for my money

again you got the whole deadball era hitting . Mays lost 2 years to military service, what wouldve been his 2nd and 3rd year.. who knows who or what Mays would have surpassed if he hadnt gone

Ill put willie Mays in center

Left Field

Ty Cobb can stay there besides a hit when needed and a stolen base from leadoff is good as a a double, he played with such intensity that a ball club like mine could use him.

The Bench vs Berra debate still goes on. A few years back I read a Biography on Berra and it mentioned the fact that whenever the question of "Who is the greatest catcher of all time" comes up it is almost always Berra vs. Bench.

Well they did limit it to just 15 cards/14players (Ruth is in the set twice?) so right there they were shooting themselves in the foot.

Bench at the time was still playing so the question is do you include a current player in an all-time greats set?

I wonder what their criteria for consideration to be included in the set was? One might have been only retired players. Did they restrict it to HOFers?

Washington DC area Sports teams and Vintage plus Non-Sport.
