Collector Zone _ Group Box Breaks _ Boxbreakers Multi-Sport Group Break

I admit the timing could be better with mjda starting up Bob's old multi-sport group but bringing back the Boxbreakers old "Exquisite Club" has been overdue and after talking with mjda I'm convinced both groups can be successfull together rather than compete together.
That being said we are reinventing our old "Exquisite Club" which will be renamed simply the Multi-Sport Group as we will not limit ourselves to just Exquisite products as we did before. The focus will still be mid-high to high end products but the actual products broken will be decided by the group. The only prerequisite will be that it must be a box containing no more than 10 packs so this can be an all-Youtube break and we can more easily focus on higher end stuff.
We will format this much like the old group where you join the group by selecting any available team (from any of the 4 sports - Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey). Once we have filled up all 40 of our slots and collected the $75 slot fee we'll hold a draft (randomized order) where you can select another team (in any sport) and then use a reverse order 2nd round where you draft your 3rd team. You must hold a team from at least two different sports by the end of the draft. We will however allow trading following the draft so if you want you can end up with all 3 teams in the same sport.
As usual you get every card pulled from all the boxes broken and we will do the best we can to split the budget evenly between the 4 sports. Because this will be an on-going monthly group you will have the right to retain ONE team from one month to the next but the other two teams will be drafted teams each month. If you have interest in joining us you can select any unclaimed team to start with...just let me know. Dates to be determined but I'd like to have our first break in late June. Once we fill 40 slots we will continue to take names for the waitlist as with any new group there are bound to be a couple drop outs.

Idea, somehow every team I tried to get was taken preemail. Since these last couple spots are for the people who did not get the TIER 1 teams, how about the draft order is the reverse order of the teams list. This may help fill those final spots quickly and make the denial emails a little easier to deal with. Just a thought chris let me know what you think.

i too got rejected with quite a few teams. but i feel thats just the name of the game. with 4 sports being represented, i feel there are still "tier 1" teams out there. in addition there are only 5 more spots til fill. it wont be a hard fill and i would like to keep the draft randomized. that is just my .02

Patrick I understand the frustration of not getting a team you like better but I think we need to keep the draft process a random one. I also added you to the waitlist for other teams so if one of them decides to drop out you will be waiting in line.

I agree that with (4) sports represented there are still plenty of nice teams left to pick from. If I wasn't so committed in other breaks I'd take a shot at some baseball teams I have much interest in. The drafting for our second and third teams should be exciting. I've been waiting to get in some higher-end breaks.

Yes, as soon as we fill I'd like to get suggestions on the product list (each sport will have approximately a $670 budget). I'd then be looking to collect payments and then finally the draft followed by a short (2-3 days) trading period before we break.

With just one slot left it's time to start talking products. I am open to what we go with as long as it's fairly high end which is why I suggest no more than 10 packs per box. We should have a budget of about $670 to spend on each of the 4 sports. I'd prefer to use products from the last 3 years so if 2009 products are out for that sport I think we should look at 2007-2008-2009 stuff. We don't necessarily have to have every year represented but if we're light on one year this month I'd like to go heavy on that year next month. In fact I'd like us to form the product list for the next two months in the next week or so and each time we forulate the list we ca do two months at a time. Payment will still be per month however.
So just to throw out some ideas on products, here are a few I was thinking of but I'd like the group to decide so let me hear opinions!

Good start of a list Chris. Since you have a nice start, it is easier to say what I don't like on your list for baseball (since that is my area of expertise). Please don't even consider Ballpark.....it is really just well disguised crap. Just a bunch of boring, multipiece-one color swatches of players who are labeled for one team and dressed in another uniform. 2009 version may be better, but 2008 version was really a ######-poor effort on UD's part. As for Topps Sterling, it doesn't work very well for team-based breaks. It works much better as its own break where you draft the player as opposed to the team because most teams aren't represented in the product. Otherwise, your baseball possibilities look good.

I think this is a great base to be honest. Just would not recommend 2006 NT or Exquisite.

Good starts on the product discussion. I agree on Ballpark, Topps Sterling, and TTT that they should be shelved but I figured I'd list them anyway to get opinions.
Personally I think Hockey should always include the CUP, and Football should always include either NT or Exquisite. I like UD Premier and Ultimate as options as well.

But the Bang for the Buck with 2007 having Lincecum and others.
It would be a nice changeup for some of the lesser baseball teams as well as the big names. And delivers well for its price point

Your points are valid. But the same could be said for Bowman Sterling Football. And I think people would have a fit if we suggested Bowman Sterling instead of National Treasures.

It breaks down to about $40 per pack depending on the year so while it's not super high end I think it would still qualify. I also want to try to avoid going all super high end as the old Exquisite group broke only exquisite which meant that even though we broke 5 boxes each month several people came away with nothing in any particular month. I want to try to avoid that by mixing in some semi-high end stuff. I figure as long as it's in that $30 and above price per pack we should consider it.

I agree with this 100%. I just want to make sure that the lower end product is going to be shuffled from sport to sport every month. Baseball gets the lower-end product this month, football next month, etc etc. If the point is fairness, we also need to be fair between sports.

I agree. The main issue with BB is that there is no ultra high end product. Prime Cuts is probably as high end (as far as per pack price) that's out there where as with the others you always have Exquisite or the CUP. I agree we should try to mix it up from month to month but in the end try to keep budgets and # of boxes as eveny spread out amongst sports as possible.

I think we shouldn't include UD Black, i mean two cards per box for that high a price is a bit too much.
I would like to see NBA Chronology and Ultimate, in the NFL i think that National Treasures are really cool so i would love to see that series included
Other than that i really don't care cause any of us could pull something nice in any of the other boxes (of course we could get something nice from some Black boxes but it would only be like 6 of us 
)

I wouldn't count on 07NT as in the past month it's become impossible to find. In fact even 06 has disappeared and when you do find it it costs $200 more than it did a few weeks ago.

I do believe that the NT for the most part is GONE 07, too Expensive 08, harder to find and more expensive now 06.
Triple threads I love but the hits just don't cut it. 07 TTT had a better lineup than 08 anyhow...
I know a lot of people rag on the Sterling. Not just the group but across collecting boards. I don't get it though.
It is one of the first products to dissappear from the bigger outlets. Someone is buying it and liking it. Several auto's, G/U, duals, logo. etc... It's bang as far as spread is pretty nice I think.
Hockey and NBA I have no clue or complaints with the decisions.
Baseball is 1000 rookies every year and 3 sell so what's it matter 
Basically just wanted my 2 cents in for sterling in FB. I'd really try for 2003 SP Authentic so I could have a shot at what I want, but I believe other than me the Cowboys collector would be the only one to agree.

As far as The Cup goes, I'm totally for it - and in agreement that it should be part of the mix pretty much every month.
I might throw in a suggestion that even 2005-06 and 2006-07 The Cup get mixed in on occasion. If I recall correctly, there weren't very many redemptions to worry about in the product (always a concern with older product etc.) and making a wider variety of hockey teams worth drafting.

i love the cup!!!! 05-06 is sick expensive, though. I also like ultimate hockey. they really did well with the 08-09.
basketball: exquisite,ultimate, black is cool but to few hits to be worth it, i think
baseball: prime cuts, ultimate, spa
football: NT, ultimate, exquisite.
that's my opinion, for what it is worth. I would like to see multiple years just not too far back. 06 NT football is expired redemptions.

UGH! Mike... Premier and Signature are awful products... especially Signature... who wants a Spud Webb auto numbered to 1899? Or Hawes two versions at over 1600... tons of worthless signatures... and Premier with all those ugly MFG patches of the players... I sure hope we don't use either of these products for Bkb...

Since both my picks are in football I'll suggest EXQUISITE / NT/ ULTIMATE and BOWMAN STERLING has always been a favorite of mine and would add to a nice mix and change for the football side. Agree with axing any products that only deliver a few pack hits such as TTT, etc.
Whatever we pick in all sports we need to ensure that any REDEMPTIONS are still valid in any product chosen so if we go back as far as '06 and possibly some '07 we need to be careful.

i too am cool with just about anything you all choose. however, i am kinda confused on the lack of love for 06 NT. i know i have opened probably 10 or so cases myself and seen chris open countless cases. 06 NT is by far i think the best NT set to date. and i wouldnt worry too much about redemptions. i think chris can attest to this, that there are just not that many redemption in this set. i would guess out of 10 cases i saw just one redemption for a brian calhoun auto rookie.
just my .02 to try to keep 06 NT in the mix if possible.
oh and i have broken quite a bit of ud black and......LOVE IT. some of the best looking cards i have ever seen.

My thoughts are Prime Cuts are real nice if we can get a good price.
as i look through hockey it does appear that The Cup is the product
and years are flexable. Basketball I am not to sure on. Football
I think it would be nice to see some more Exquisite or NT although I
would rather see 08 than 06.

Problems (as I see them)
1. Redemptions
2. Price and with it drying up costing more now.
3. Since this isn't a HIGH END group, just getting seven cards is a bit cheap.
Everyone wants NT, Exquisite and Prime Cuts...From what I remember as an original Exquisite Club breaker with Chris. $120 and up was only getting us like 6 boxes and the price ran recurring members away. At 75 I think a little more realistic products will make this group last longer.
Not to mention we couldn't even squeeze in the hockey last time.
No I don't want 2005 Topps Chrome (Old Joke for some)
I just can't expect to get at 75 what it is I get in a break that is considerabbly more.

i know over on another site 06 NT Blowout was selling for $199 a box if you join the other site VIP club which was only $20 if i had the money i would of got one as i always wanted to breaked NT

With the exception of the manufactured patch "coasters", UD Premier gives a pretty good high-end value.
While I'd like everything to be NT/Exquisite, I don't relish the idea of easily getting skunked.
At least one product per sport with a good number of hits would be appreciated.

I don't see where we couldn't have 1 higher end box in a sport but we need alternate options with the remaining $$ per sport.
Yes we do have more members but the price has dropped as well. Sort of equals out dollar wise. But if we go strictly High End then the number of participants getting shutout is a proportional increase as well. If all we do is boxes containing roughly 7 cards, we are looking at MORE THAN HALF of every sport being shutout. Some teams as we know don't appear as often in some years making the HALF even larger. I just think it's risky to throw it all in one hat so to speak. I am in it either way. I've won a few and lost a few.
This is one of my vice's I am not giving up
I've heard a lot about The Cup for hockey, I hope we get to see it.

If all we do is boxes containing roughly 7 cards, we are looking at MORE THAN HALF of every sport being shutout. Some teams as we know don't appear as often in some years making the HALF even larger. I just think it's risky to throw it all in one hat so to speak. I am in it either way. I've won a few and lost a few.

I've heard a lot about The Cup for hockey, I hope we get to see it.

Thats why I think 07 Exquisite is a good idea BO has it around $335 which would leave half the money for other products, but still allow us to have a nice expensive break.

Exactly what In was planning. I'd like to have one very high end product in each sport if possible and then fill in the other half or so with mid-high stuff that will hopefully assure everyone of at least something without dipping into the cheaper stuff like Stadium Club or Chromes.
If I get time I'll try to put up a proposed list today/tomorrow and we can tweak it as we go.

i like the list. could we check the status on 06-07 CUP redemptions? I would like to make sure that they are still valid or redeemable before committing to it. In a super high end product like that, it would severly suck if the redemptions were expired and not valid.

Yeah the only reason I went with 06 is that all 3 venders I usually use are out of 07 but I would expect we should be able to pick it up by Julys break.

Yep, normal Boxbreaker rules would apply across the board. For those of you new to my breaks here are some general guidelines we use;
Multi-player hits go to the team player that is pictured either to the left (if players are pictured horizontally) or on top (if pictured vertically). The only exception to this is if one team is represented more times than any other team. For instance if a Triple GU card has a Bull first, followed by two Lakers, the card goes to the lakers despite the location of the players on the card. If the card design makes it too difficult to know what team is pictured first then if the back of the card lists teams in order it will be the first team listed.
The only cards that would be randomized would be cards for people that don't have a team representation such as a Heisman Cut Auto or a Presidential Auto type of a card. However if we hit a major hit that isn't assigned to a team we may decide as a group to sell the card on Ebay and put the funds towards the next months products. (That's what Gottabe was referring to as we pulled an uncut sheet redemption last year and since no players/teams were mentioned we sold it on the Bay and rolled the funds over).

You're right...not sure why I didn't catch that and the budget I used was just the $450 downpayment price listed for a case. I guess I haven't bought BK Exquisite recently to notice how spendy it is! Not sure we'll be able to get much of that for BK but my alteration to the product list would be this;
take out 08 Exquisite and add in 08 UD Premier and 08 SP Rookie Threads. That would get us back on budget as BK was a good $50 over with the original plan. I also switched out UD Premier for Black on the July list for BK so we don't have Premier twice in a row for the same sport. So here is what I'm thinking;

I think we'll set the payment deadline for June 7th (whereas my other monthly groups will be June 13th) as I expect the draft to take a little extra time as well as allowing for a trading period. No, we'll follow the same format as before where you cannot trade draft picks and you must have at least two sports represented following the draft but once the draft is complete you may trade between sports or whatever you want to do (even trading two for one if you wish).

In the multi sport drafts we use to do, you have to treat each draft spot seperately. Your spot will come up due as the sport needed not just your time to select. That's how we use to do it. It keeps the multiple slot people from hoarding all of one sport.
I can't speak for Chris' intentions but that is how we use to do it, then you can trade amongst members for whatever you wish.

Yes, that would still be the process. By the end of the draft you must have at least two sports represented in each of your slots owned (prior to trading). Once the draft is done you can trade away any sport you wish and end up with 3 of the same sport if you wish.
I am about to do the random draft order (on random.org) but as I'm on the road I have no camera to record it so hopefully all will be fine with that rather than waiting a whole other week to get to the draft. I'll have it up soon and we can start right away. There will be a 12 hour timelimit on making your selection but we'll try to daytime hours. Obviously try to make your picks much sooner with that. Remember no trading draft slots so there should be no reason to hold up the draft. Let's start this soon!

Yeah, I didn't want to think of that as a possibility but I know it probably is. Let's see how this month goes and if we find that happens then next month we may have to require that the first draft pick is a different sport than your claimed team. I'd rather not force that but we'll see if it's necessary based on how we do this month.

That's correct, we only run the clock during the day. He has until 12:51pm (ct) to make his pick and if at that time he has not been able to check in and select a team I will pick one for him. I try to either pick one from his signature (the only one available is the Angels) or if he is in one of my normal breaks with a team I'll pick that team for him. In this case he has been our Texans collector so if he has not picked by 12:51 he will be assigned the Texans. I say that now as I may not have a computer accessible during the day so at 12:51 you may move on to the next draft pick and consider the Texans off the board... in other words don't wait for me.
If after this pick Cool Hand Flash checks in and wants to change his pick he may do so at any time.

I'd really rather avoid a randomizer as I think it adds alot when people get to pick the actual team they want. While it's taking awhile I built that into the schedule as I had listed the break date as the 20th. I'll be out of town all this week and would like to keep the break on the weekend so that puts us to the 20th. Only because of that am I not too worried about this month but I am open to ideas for next month that would help us shorten the drafting process???

the only other option would be to require everyone to send in a list of their choices, in order.....but with 4 sports that would take forever......but it could solve a lot of the impatience....

Funny you should say that as that's exactly what I was about to propose.
Starting next month for instance, this is how it could work;
Say I post the randomized draft order on July 10. The top 15 picks would have to make their pick (or send me their list of top 15 teams prioritized) so the first 15 would be picked by the end of the day on the 11th. Slots #16-30 would have to make their selection or submit a list to me by end of day on the 12th. The bottom 10 slots would be asked for their top 20 list and we'd draft the bottom 10 and then their first 10 picks of the 2nd round by end of day on July 13th. Next 15 slots going back up the draft order would be due by end of day July 14th, and the final 15 slots would be due by end of day July 16th.
I know people don't like the idea of submitting prioritized lists but if we keep it to 15 or so a day it doesn't get too overwhelming trying to prioritize 120 teams!
Would this work for people for next month?
I'm open to other suggestions or tweaks...

works fine. I just do not understand how people can't check the list to see when they draft, then check in periodically and keep it moving. People know who is not around and they should send the list. Chris your idea is great.

Well for this month anyway I would still strongly suggest that if your slot is within the next 10 picks that you send me a list of prioritized teams at least 4-5 picks if not all 10. Normally I'd be able to have the thread up and update as they come in but I'll only have random access during the day this week but I'll keep it up to date as best I can.

That wouldn't seem very fair.
I'd think if the two leftover teams had any hits they would be randomized. Or like was mentioned earlier in the thread, they could be purchased through a silent auction prior to the break.
