I feel pretty certain it wasn't done intentionally (a freak accident as was noted in the article.) If you're talking about the fact that pitchers pitching inside causes such a thing, then how do you get all pitchers to adjust . Seems impossible to me. In 1995 Kirby suffered a broken jaw in a game and some have speculated that it may have led to the glaucoma that caused him to lose sight in his right eye. I guess that may help but if you think about the amount of foul balls having been hit and how many have hit somebody in the eye in the ondeck circle, the odds are pretty slim.
