Like 'em? Hate 'em? Indifferent?
At first when the whole "fad" started I thought they were dumb....why would i want a manufactured patch that was never touched by the player?
Recently, however, I've started to view this thing a little differently. Unless we are lucky enough to pull a game-used patch, most of these "game-used" pieces we get are the same old same old (unless we're talking vintage players, of course). At times if we don't pull a jersey/bat/whatever of a player we like, it's treated almost like a common base card.
I remember in my younger collecting days how they were no game-used. Instead, the "hits" were creative, well-designed inserts. The manufactured patches bring back a little bit of this creativity in the patch design. And, in some cases they are much more eye-appealing than a plain one-color jersey of a player I'm not interested in.
I pulled my first manufactured patch from a 2010 Topps blaster yesterday. At first, I wasn't impressed but I'm beginning to like it. I'm definitely happier with it than I would be with a jersey of a backup player.

I have mixed feelings about them. I like these when they are autographed so there is something real to them, but what I have disliked recently is the trend by manufacturers to offer this as a "hit" as opposed to putting the real stuff in the packs. Prices keep going up but the quality of the products keeps going down or staying the same. Would I rather have this then a low-end scrubs gu card, maybe, guess it would depend on how bad the scrub was. Don't get me wrong they look nice, but it is similar to walking into a sport shop and cutting out the letters off of one of the fake jerseys. Never got near my player so holds only slightly more value than a base card.

Manufactured patches are worthless, in my opinion. They have no real value, unless they are autographed by the player or players.
The problem with manufactured patch cards they often look bad. I've yet to see a design in the basketball hobby that looks good. Furthermore, they have quickly become another fad in the hobby, and the only positive thing to come from them is they help increase the value of actual game-used pieces.
So, instead of card manufacturers spending the money to buy actual game-used jerseys, we're being charged even more for manufactured pieces (in terms of by-the-pack and by-the-box). If a company loads its product with manufactured pieces, then the price of said product should reflect it. I'm not seeing that.
Thank goodness I collect Gary Payton, because all of his memorabilia cards contain worn pieces (so far), whether it's from an event, practice or game.
