Sorry guys, I can't join the warm fuzzy thread here. Congratulations on what? Fooling 57-some million people into thinking you have good ideas? I hope he doesn't deliver on any of his promises. I've yet to see the government do anything well and Obama just promises more of it. That doom and gloom speech yesterday followed by the market dropping is not encouraging. I am not hopeful for his presidency so I'll not pretend to be just to jump on the sweetness and light bandwagon. If I see positive moves by him, then I'll be more supportive. Until then, I'll be realistic. All this emotion surrounding this time is confusing to me. We elected a president based on emotion and feelings rather than issues. That truly saddens me. No one talks about what this hope and optimism is based on in terms of policy. I know, I know, the world will love us again, a "smart" guy is in the white house (just how smart are these cabinet picks?), etc. I am not bitter or angry - I'm just sad. But I am optimistic because emotion is short lived and sooner or later, it will wear off and then the new administration will be held accountable for their actions - not just their words. I certainly don't want to rain on anyone's parade though so continue to celebrate! Enjoy the "hope" and "change", whatever that may be.

You don't have to "support" Obama. Don't be so negative about him every chance you get when he hasn't done ANYTHING right or wrong yet. I'm not going to blindly shower him with praise because he hasn't done anything yet. Likewise, I don't know why some want to have such a hateful attitude yet for the same reason. QUOTE(cdoyal @ Jan 21 2009, 11:32 AM) I don't seem to remember the left wanting to give Bush a chance in 2000 because he "stole the election". I guess I have to modify a statement in my post. I am bitter about one thing - the way Bush was treated by the left and the media for eight years. Many people won't ever forget that so don't expect everyone to immediately and blindly support Obama now.

He hasn't done anything wrong yet, just promised things that are wrong like universal health care, signing the freedom of choice act, and closing GITMO. I thought I clarified my feeling and it's sadness, certainly not anything close to hate.

Many, including me, view closing GITMO as a good thing considering the controversies surrounding it over the past few years. aceecards bashed Obama without ceasing during the election. Yet in his topic he chose to at least TRY to give the President the benefit of the doubt. Yet in his topic he chose to at least TRY to give the President the benefit of the doubt. The "controversies" were with a few select people who were punished. So it should be closed because it evokes bad emotions? (more emotions and feelings) But to stay on topic, I refuse to be a lemming, riding a wave of emotion, over a cliff. But I sure do "hope" I'm wrong about him!

Many people won't ever forget that so don't expect everyone to immediately and blindly support Obama now. What about his 90% approval ratings after 9/11? And you say you dont want to rain on anybody's parade right after doing so for two paragraphs. Youre just a walking logical error lately. And you "hope he doesn't deliver on any of his promises?" Are you kidding? You are actually so bitter after the election that you wish failure on the winner, even though his failure is directly related to the failure of the people and the nation? Come off it.

A policy failure is a personal failure when your at the highest position. He has everything riding on his policies, his reputation, his legacy. While Bush was president, I didnt like him or his policies or his actions. He might have been a failure, but I sure didnt wish him to. He is the President. If he fails, so do we.

If you don't study and fail a test by putting down all the wrong answers, are you a failure as a person? No. You probably succeed in other things. If I met you, I probably wouldn't like you as a person (based on the way you present yourself here) but that doesn't mean I want you to fail as a person. I would want you to succeed in life but I sure wouldn't want you to lead the country. I do the wrong thing sometimes in my personal life as we all do. But as a whole, I'm certainly not a failure by any measure. If "The One" didn't want the tough job with "everything riding on it", then he shouldn't have run.

Wouldn't you guess that if the President, the leader of our country, fails - our country isn't going to do too good either? Failing a test and failing as President are two VERY different things. "The One" junk is annoying. The only ones I hear carrying on about that are anti-Obama folks. I thought I had made this clear but apparently I've failed. I want Obama to succeed as President if the definition of success is that taxes are lower, personal responsibility is touted, our enemies are defeated, government shrinks, the stock market rises, etc. etc. I want Obama to fail as President if the definition of success is that taxes are higher, health care is run by the governement, taxes are raised, our enemies are appeased, decisions are made based on how the world perceives us, abortion on demand at any time during pregnancy is law, etc. etc. As far as "The One" label, we've lived with "The Shrub", Bushie, Daddy Bush's little boy, etc. as well as all the unmentionable labels for eight years.

QUOTE(cdoyal @ Jan 21 2009, 12:16 PM) I certainly don't want to rain on anyone's parade though so continue to celebrate! Enjoy the "hope" and "change", whatever that may be. Well, you've not only rained on the parade, you've managed to bring Katrina back.
I fully intend to enjoy and find inspiration in the hope, joy and celebration that I witnessed in the bitter cold of the Mall yesterday. There is, whether the ultra-right cares to acknowledge it or not, an anticipation of glory and greatness in this administration. Granted, your statement that emotion is short-lived, there are at least 1 million of us that will hold on to it longer than you assume.
The bar is as low as it has been in the history of this country, if a comparison between the present occupants of the West Wing and those that preceded them is concerned. They can only succeed at this point.
GITMO will require another thread, one which I shall initiate, have no doubts.
